It seemed like an eternity watching Mary-Anne and his mother struggle on the floor, until finally Mary-Anne burst into tears, folding up into his mother and crying her heart out. Bobby never even noticed when his father came home nor did he notice when his dad quietly cleaned up the broken glass around Mary-Anne and Lisa. Bobby just stood there, transfixed, wondering why Mary-Anne had destroyed the photos of his big sister.
Finally Mary-Anne fell asleep, exhausted from moving into her new home and the emotions which were released from the episode with the photos. Dinner was long forgotten, which was fine as no one had an appetite. Lisa threw the burned roast into the garbage and put away the dishes that Bobby had earlier placed upon the table, without saying a word. Robert muttered something about needing space and headed outside, while Lisa sat in her favourite rocking chair, holding a photo of Tracey, staring out the window as tears silently fell down her cheeks.
Bobby slipped away, unnoticed. Up in his tree fort, he sat on the edge, looking out towards the night sky, feeling very confused.
“Hey moon, what the heck happened in there?” He asked, “How come Mary-Anne got so crazy? And she calls me crazy!”
Bobby swung his feet in the air as he let out a big sigh. Being grown-up really bit and he was tired of trying to figure it out. Wasn’t Mary-Anne happy? Didn’t they have fun today?
“Hey moon, how come she can be so fun one time and so mean the next time?”
“You always talk to moons Bobby Parsons? Like I said, you are crazy!”
Bobby jumped and nearly fell off the fort at the sound of Mary-Anne’s voice. She steadied him with her hand, then sat down beside him.
“I really messed things up, didn’t I.” Mary-Anne said quietly, “I don’t know why though, that is the strange part. I really don’t know why.”
Bobby looked up at the moon, back down to his dark home and over at Mary-Anne. He took her hand in his, squeezing tightly and didn’t move as she placed her head upon his shoulder.
He whispered, “One day Mary-Anne, we are going to go to the moon. Where there is no more pain. And we’ll be famous. Just you wait and see.”
Mary-Anne remained quiet, staring off into the dark night sky. Sitting up on the fort, Bobby looked to the moon for answers and finding none, he looked over at Mary-Anne and wondered why he liked her so much. As her eyes began to close, he coaxed her up and into the enclosed area of the fort and helped her to lie down on the mattress by the wall. He lay down on the floor and sleep quickly came over them both, as the moon cast dark shadows upon the rough walls.
