"Here's the guestroom," Jane told Kaitlin, pointing at the empty bedroom. "You can stay here for as long as you need to. There's some clothes in the closet. They may be out of style, but they should fit you."
Kaitlin nodded as she looked through the clothes in the closet. "These are fine."
The two of them stepped out in the hallway and saw that Lucien was still sitting in the living room. Since his outburst, he hadn't uttered a word.
"Something really bad must have happened," Jane muttered. "I thought he'd reel us out for meeting up with him, but he didn't. He seems more disturbed about whatever happened with Mariam."
"I'd rather you ladies talk TO me, rather than ABOUT me," Lucien said in a loud voice.
Jane frowned. "I forgot--vampires have VERY sensitive hearing."
"Let me speak with him," Kaitin suggested.
Jane nodded as Kaitlin entered the living room.
Kaitlin knew that Lucien had his reasons for being upset, but she had never seen him so distraught about anything as he did now. If anything, he looked like a broken man . . . as though he had just been revealed a filthy secret.
"Lucien, I'm sorry if you're still upset with us," Kaitlin said. "But if you want to blame someone, blame me. I was the one who insisted on us finding you."
"I told you both not to come."
"I know, but I had a bad feeling about your meeting, and I was afraid for you. We both decided it was best to meet up with you, yes, but it was at my urging."
Lucien averted his gaze.
Kaitlin stared at him. "Even though you came away from her in one piece, something did happen, did it?"
She watched his eyes shut tightly as he involuntarily clenched his features.
"Lucien, tell me, please," Kaitlin said, kindly, taking one of his hands in hers. "Don't be afraid to confide in me."
He was silent for a moment before he whispered, "I was never ill. The reason why I'm a vampire . . . it has nothing to do with any sort of illness. It was all because of HER. All these centuries, and I didn't even begin to suspect, let alone find out until tonight."
Kaitlin watched as Lucien turned away as his shoulders began to shake. It was evident that he was trying not to cry. "Lucien," she said, kindly, resting her hand on one of his shoulders.
"It didn't need to happen!" Lucien cried, his body wracking with sobs. "I didn't have to be this, and because of her, I'm a monster!"
Lucien continued to sob as Kaitlin held his head in her arms, stroking his massive shoulders in an effort to comfort him. "Don't say that. You're no monster. You're the kindest man I know."
Lucien looked up at her, her loving words silencing him.
"As strange as this may sound," Kaitlin said, wiping away his red tears, "if it hadn't been for her, we would never have met. I would never have fallen in love with you."
"You don't know what you're saying."
"Of course I know what I'm saying. I also know that you feel the same way about me."
Judging from the expression on Lucien's face, Kaitlin knew she was right.
