Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, whose writings were truly deep and inspirational, and who paradoxically (for a monk) had a lot to say about society, actually looked at our predicament from an occassionally more optimistic attitude, stating that-- with our long history of war and human cruelty-- it is actually pretty amazing that we have not killed ourselves off the planet-- that the Good lives on despite ourselves. A concentration camp survivor will tell you that once you've been reduced to absolutely nothing, one will open themselves to forgiving all-- even one's perpetuators. This takes extreme courage, but maybe it is because of such individuals we are still here. Food for thought.
Like London, the human race is very resilient. I agree if we continue to go the path we are on there will be a great shift, not all will be lost...someone might build a boat! Anthony
