Stuck
by James Shammas (Age: 44)
copyright 07-17-2005

Age Rating: 7 to 127

I bounced a quarter off the wall, and landing on its edge,
it did not fall!

I saw it on the Twilight Zone, where an old cynic did the same--
becoming clairvoyant,

reading mens' minds so that he could
change the world--

till a tossed gazette just made it fall,
his hopes and dreams

crashing in a coin-box of chaos and fear--
the city noise and pithy lights

splitting him on a wire, splicing him on a rim--
so that he trusts

neither heads nor tails-- neither at all
until it falls.

I shot an arrow into the air.......................................

Loved this, my friend. Great rhythm and musicality. A message in a bottle with light-hearted comedy. Who could ask for more?
I could ask to read more of your poetry.
And I think I will
read,

reed

P.S. Sounds a lot like William Carlos Williams

I have no points left, sorry! To me, this is a parable, a riddle and a poem all bunched up in one. Like Brian, I had to read it a few times, but I did end up making heads or tails of it! This is a lovely, intelligent and practical poem!

Jim, this is deep. I had to read it three or four times. But I got there.
Is life fifty fifty? Black or white?
Or are there many shades of grey?
Good or evil?
Or maybe an amalgam of all of these, who knows.
You have started me thinking.
Watch this space,,,,,lol.
Brian.

James, heads or tails are just 2 of the options that life gives us. Life is much more interesting when the coin spins and rolls down the street....
great write.

I love the line "and trust neither heads nor tails-- neither at all."

This is an awesome, poem, James, and shows such nervousness to really make a decision. Or perhaps, it shows an example of the best decision of them all--when it seems like there's only two choices, the third impossibility is the best.

The next someone asks me "heads or tails", I'm telling them "sides". :)
