(((Wow! Talk about going back in time. I wrote this in like 9th grade. My wife and I just bought a house and I was going through old boxes, and boom I stumbled upon some really old poems. I will try to get some of these up and tell you about when I wrote them. Enjoy!)))
Sweat and Blood.
Pride and Glory.
I lay my soul on the field before me.
Champions are born,
Boys made into men.
Hours of hard work put to the test.
They try their hardest.
These gladiators of today.
Settling for a championship and nothing less,
Because to them there is no second best.

This is not bad at all for a freshman write...I'm impressed....You captured the mindset of the athlete, not only at the high school level, but all levels...the only time the mindset changes is when it expands to accommodate the dollar value of commercial athleticism. A really good write for any age.
I'm the most unathletic person around, but I can appreciate what they must go through. (It was enough excercise just carrying that beard of mine around.) Good descriptions. I certainly wasn't writing in grade 9.
So true. No-one remembers who took second place.
Here in the UK it was always thought to be enough just to take part.
That has all changed. Now we want to win.
I confess, I never liked coming second,,lol.
I would check you spelling. I think you meant 'through'

Ah, the mind of the athlete. And just like back in ancient Rome, all the victors of these high school gladatorial rings truely keep for the long run is memories of the good old days and bad knees ^.~
