Epitaph of a Genius

It ain’t that you aren’t rich enough
Or that you aren’t hot
It’s just that you don’t have the charm
Dean Martin you’re simply not

Sure, you’re sweet and friendly
But every girl with which you’re smitten
Will simply coo and pat your head
As if you were a kitten

Lots of times you try too hard
And give the lass a scare
Whenever you act casual
It’s like you just aren’t there

You know you’re a romanticist
That you’re loud and you’re direct
And you grow attached too quickly
And struggle with self-respect

Over the years you’ve conquered
Each of these lovely traits
But now your youth’s begun to fade
So what difference does it make?

It makes no difference to your loving craft
You’ve offered up your soul to
But it can’t provide the warmth and solace
That other human beings do

Maybe if you carry on
Minding your own business
You’ll hook that special girl someday
Who’ll grant you all your wishes

They say there’s just too many folks
Walking about this world of ours
To not appeal to one of them
Who’ll take you dancing on the stars

But if it doesn’t work that way?
Would you live your remaining days
Just as you are, longing for someone
To tell you everything’s okay?

Then not all our lives turn out the way
We’d wanted them to be, I guess
You can’t help what you never get
Like fame, fortune, or happiness

Well Mr. Interlocutor your well-written and engaging poem as reminded me of a conundrum I have struggled with for years, ergo- is it them or me? Can I not see their attributes, or is it my attributes they refused to see? A well-done piece when it makes other people think hard. Thank you for your pleasant comments on my work. Fred

I too liked the way your voice talked to a second person. I found the piece entertaining from top to bottom.

nits again, most of the stanzas had good rhythm, but some did not.

See ya',

Rich

I love the quasi-advizing sound to this; how you address an unknown person matter of factly to believe and love oneself rather than looking outward-- something I get from Emerson.

You raise many valid points, here. It can be very frustrating at times. I remember when I was younger, going out to dance clubs, the girls that I liked, I invited them to dance. Most of them, said no to me, until I realized what the problem was. I soon started to invite those girls that were looking at me! When I went to take them out to dance, they were eager to do so! Sometimes, like Anthony said, we look for the wrong things and in the wrong places. What the Universe has destined for you will not belong to anyone else but you. Be patient, yours is coming!
