Cause and Effect

  Cause and Effect

Think about what it took to get you here, at this moment, at the place you are now. The first thoughts that come into your mind are probably major events in your life and major choices you have made. What if I told you that these 'major' things are merely grains of sand on the beach of your existence.
Think about it. What if you chose to have eggs for breakfast on June 10th, 1998 instead of what you actually had. Your whole life could be different right now. Maybe cooking the eggs would have taken an extra 5 seconds and you would have left your house five seconds later. You may have met different people that day, maybe you would have tripped on something(and broke an arm) that would have been avoided had you left your house five seconds earlier. (Because you left five seconds later, your steps would be out of sync with the other possibility, and you may have stepped on something that would have been otherwise avoided.)Keep in mind, the difference between a car accident and two cars going on their way is often less than a second.
But it goes even deeper than that. Think of what it took for you to be alive in the first place. What if your dad, before he had met your mother) had had eggs for breakfast instead of cereal. Maybe he would have never met your mother, and you would therefore never have existed. What if the relationship between your mother and father was slightly different and they were intimate on a Thursday instead of a Friday. An entirely different baby would have been conceived.
Now, go back farther...what about your parent's parents? What series of precise events did it take to get them together and conceive the children that they did. Imagine the improbable chain of events that go back thousands of years to your ancestors. If each little event hadn't happened exactly as it did, I guarantee that you would not be here now, at PnP, reading this somewhat incoherent story.
You could go crazy thinking about the possibilities. What if, a million years ago, a butterfly had landed on a tree leaf instead of on a branch? What effect would that have had on the present world.Maybe if it had landed on the branch, the chain of events that followed would have led to you having a different name, or maybe you wouldn't even exist, or maybe George Bush would have been a good president and not a power hungry monster.
It may seem far fetched, but I think you understand my point.
Now, let's talk about the present. If we accept that a small change in the past has had major effects on our present, then we have to also accept that small changes in the present will have a major impact on the future.Everything you do affects everything else. Writing a simple poem can affect nations. Turning left or right on a street can affect future governments. Eating eggs instead of cereal can create a future where the Earth is paradise.
It is often a blind choice. We can only guess what each of our small decisions will have on the future. Maybe if I wasn't writing this line right now, I would be writing a different line that might change someone's view of this entire story. Who knows.
Now, I just want to share a few of the events that led me to write this article, just to illustrate my point.
Here is a list of identifiable, 'major' events in my recent history that has led to this.

About ten years ago I was flipping around the channels on the TV, bored. I came across a strange looking show called 'Sailor Moon'. It happened to be a very good episode, so I watched another episode the following week. What if the episode wasn't good? What if I had continued to change the channel?
After a few months, I am hooked on Sailor Moon. What if the show had never been created?
Two years ago:I am on the internet searching for pictures of sailor Moon. I come across a site called Prose-n-Poetry.com. I decide to check it out. I was mostly there just for the image gallery. I downloaded a few pictures and noticed that people were writing about Sailor Moon. I liked what I read and eventually decided to join PnP as a member.
8 months ago:I have my internet disconnected for financial reasons. I leave a good bye note on PnP.
2 months ago:I decide that I will worry about my financial problems in my next life and get reconnected.
Yesterday:I start my one week holiday from work, giving me more time to be here.
1 hour ago:I read a poem which gives me the idea to write this story.
50 minutes ago:I decide to write this story
NOW:I am nearly finished writing this.

So you see, if even one of those events, and indeed, a seemingly unlimited number of events, hadn't occurred just so, then you wouldn't be reading this now.
What effect will reading this story have on your life? The chain goes on and on and on.....

I always enjoy the thought provoking nature of your works... but OW. This one makes my head hurt. There's thought provoking, then there's synaptic strain. Ouch. Good piece though. You are obviously a very intelligent person. Thanks for sharing this, and take care.

Wow...WOW. LOL! I love this piece of writing...Every move you make can change the future, and every move you did make had an effect on what is happening in the present. Had I gone to write a new poem instead of coming to check out the Stories section I would not be here right now commenting on this story because I would not have read it. 0_o LOL! Anyway, just curious, what poem inspired you to write this? I want to read it if I haven't already!

The what ifs are not as bad as the could have beens. I could have been a great poet if you guys would all buy my books, but you want more candy and popcorn. We can't focus on what might be and pay the bills that already are! The government wants you to be so busy that you don't have time to complain or the money to actually do something about it! You raise many good questions here and I enjoyed the read. Heck I might read some more of your stories! Thanks, Anthony

I do like the way your mind works. It maybe because mine tends to go in the same direction.
I can see exactly what you mean, the butterfly's wing again.
Of course, if there had not been that 'Big Bang' the scientists talk about. None of us would be here reading this.

We talk about past present and future. If you think about it, to be in the present is near impossible.
What I have just written is now the past, I'm always heading into the future. The breath I have just breathed out is now in the past. The key stroke I have just done, is history. So how do we measure the present?
I'll stop before they put me in a rubber walled room,,,,lol.
Brian
