My Old Friend
by Stephen Washam
copyright 07-24-2005

Age Rating: 7 to 127

As I sat there waiting with my old and gentle friend
It was hard to realize that friendship soon must end
For we grew up together and I knew I’d never find
Another friend like him that was so faithful or so kind

My thoughts went back to childhood days when I was just a boy
When he first came into my life as a wiggling ball of joy
My father took me out to get a gift for my birthday
We watched him and his brothers, bark, and jump about in play

I sat down, and they began to jump and lick my face
Though soon they all lost interest and began to run and race
But he came up and placed his paw upon me tenderly
You see I didn’t pick him out, for he had chosen me

We had fun together like most boys and their dogs do
When others let me down my oldest friend was always true
Any time that I was sad or feeling a little bland
He’d come to me and place his furry paw upon my hand

As we grew up together he was always at my side
The only one I felt with whom I always could confide
When I went off to college he would mope around the floor
Each time I came for visits he was always at the door

By that time my old buddy was becoming very old
Almost ninety doggie years is what I have been told
But once I graduated and returned at last to stay
You never would have guessed it as he jumped about in play

For just a few brief moments as I came walking in
Years melted away and he was just a pup again
He told me “I’m glad you’re back”, in a way I’d understand
By coming up and putting his aging paw upon my hand

His health began to fail him and soon he couldn’t walk
He loved to have me stroke his head and listen to me talk
And though he couldn’t get around he didn’t seem to mind
But eventually my dearest friend started to go blind

I knew that he was suffering and what I had to do
But I didn’t think that I was strong enough to see it through
And as I sat there waiting at the vets just as I planned
One last time I felt his paw touch gently on my hand

It seemed as if he knew that it was time to say goodbyes
He tried his very best to stop the tears within my eyes
The procedure was quite painless as he softly fell asleep
He knew that his well being was always safest in my keep

I know if there’s a heaven beyond this earthly place
Then he is there awaiting me so we can run and race
When we are tired of running ‘cross the heavens oh so grand
Then once again I’ll feel that gentle paw upon my hand
