Rushing By
by David Pekrul
copyright 07-25-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I watch the people rushing by,
And wonder where they're going,
A hectic way to spend one's life,
What life are they enjoying?

They're chasing after things to buy,
So they can get ahead,
The things that they must leave behind,
The moment they are dead.

I once was young, but now am old,
And sit upon a bench,
In front of Parker's General Store,
My hands relaxed or clenched.

I come here every afternoon,
And stay until it's dark,
And think of how life used to be,
As people rush and dart.

I sometimes think about a time,
When I was just a boy,
A time when life was simpler,
And I was full of joy.

And then I think about the day,
When I became a man,
And swore I'd work both day and night,
To get the things I can.

But that was many years ago,
My life has come full round,
I sit and watch the younger folk,
Who rush all over town.

I hope they start to understand,
Before it is too late,
That life is more than getting things,
For Heaven doesn't wait.

Great Work!

I especially like this since my wife and I recently came to the realization that life is more than materialistic things.

It does seem funny, me and the wife seemed to never have enough room while the kids were growing up. We moved to larger homes, but there was always more junk than places to put it. Now the kids are gone and this house seems so empty.
All I have to do is go out to the storage room and look at all we wanted, but really did not need, for now it is in boxes. Good write, Anthony

David, Another Great Poem! I love your poetry. Truly a five star rating. Thank God I live a simple life and in it's self very fulfilling.

Great. Yes I watch people they never go out without buying something and in a few weeks they want rid of it. Rush and bustle. Every morning I go out to feed the birds and they wait for me especially one I call Scraggy Bird because for a while his feathers were coming out. They are not afraid of me and I feel a great joy in watching them. We should all find time to stand and watch.
