A while ago I was lost at sea
Adrift on a mass of gray
But I left the armed forces
And that ship is gone today.
It's half a world gone from here
Holding 300 of my good friends
Sailing, ever sailing every day
Right on the edge of where the world ends.
My friends are my heroes
Navy sailors tried and true
Who often hate their lot in life
But know they have a job to do
For 6 months at a go they are taken from their homes,
And taken on a "mission"
Out on the oceans where the tide roams.
They don't get a choice
And the work is hard
For very little benefit
Imagine if you will, the flowing sea
And endless blue every way you look
Now take that image and hold it
As the only thing you see for 45 days.
But they work hard and do a good job
Defending freedom and fighting well
Removing terrorists from this Earth
And sending them to...
Well...
See, it not really like that.
They wish the job was that cool
But really all they do
Is patrol the Gods' Swimming Pool.
Long hot days
Sweltering in the Arabian sun
Lots of chipping paint and fixing things
I promise none of it is fun.
But it's a job someone's got to do
And they are the best of the best
They always, always come out on top
When they are put to the test.
These folks are my heroes
The men and women of the USS Higgins crew
Who have one of the world's toughest jobs
That they absolutely have to do.
They are coming home this November
And let me tell you, I can't wait
I'm going to go see them
And party until it's late.
I email them at least once a week
And tell them thank you every time
I just wish there was more I could do
Than write this silly rhyme.
**Dedicated to the men and women who serve aboard the USS Higgins, DDG-76 of the United States Navy, currently in the Arabian Gulf as a part of the ongoing "Mission: Iraqi Freedom".**

WOW! Just WOW! Hold on for a second, I'm feeling too WOW to write a comment....
Okay. First of all, WOW! This was a totally great, deep-hearted poem dedicated in gratitude of those who risk themselves for others. *sniff* My grandfather used to be a general in our army. Almost got shot. Wait, I think he did get shot. I don't remember. I've never met him, and the last time I was told of him was when I was what, two? Oh well, great man. Wish I could have met him.
Wonderful tribute to the heroes of the greatest Navy in the world. Your poems touches on many aspects of the service and you do it much credit. Nice job here.
