Hi, Bob recently e-mailed me to let me know he had zeroed out the points I had awarded for a certain story. I had given five points because I thought the content was very good. But you know what, Bob, as usual, was completely right to zero out the points.
While the content was very good-at least in my opinion-there were many grammatical and spelling errors throughout it.
Now, obviously some works intentionally have bad spelling and grammar in order to keep the story in character-I will continue to rate these highly because I understand that intent must be considered.
However, Bob has reminded me that content is not enough on a writer's site, and spelling and grammar must be taken into account. I didn't realize it, but I was unintentionally encouraging bad writing. I love this site and all those on it, and I want to encourage good writing, so from now on I will be more critical on my point awards. I still think content is very important, so I think 3 out of the 5 points should be for content and intent of the writing, but the other two should be for grammar, structure, and spelling. We all have our own way to rate things, and I hope this method will be satisfactory.
I think content is important, because even if a story has perfect form, spelling and grammar, if the content is uninspired, the whole work falls flat. A technical manual has perfect form, spelling and grammar, but I don't think a lot of us read those for fun.
I also think sometimes people rate works highly because they are afraid to hurt the author's feelings. I don't generally do this, but I'm sure there are those who do.
If you read any of my works, don't be afraid to criticize it if it has problems or errors. I can handle it. I recently read a couple of critical comments on some of my works, and I have to say I enjoyed the honesty. While I admit I tend to write for fun, and my stories tend to border on 'just plain silly', I still think that there is room for criticism sometimes-well, a lot of the time, actually-OK, most of the time-sheesh.
Also, I don't write stories and poems to get points. I write for fun or when I am inspired to do so. I like getting comments even if they criticize my work. At least then I know people are reading my stuff. Even if you liked my story or poem, you don't have to leave points for me if you are running short on them. I will be able to tell from your comment weather or not you liked it.
There are two types of commenters. 'Form over function' and 'function over form'. I tend to be the latter, but will try to be more balanced in the future.
Thanks to anyone who actually read this whole thing. I welcome any comments-even ones that criticize this work. I would also greatly appreciate a comment from Bob if he reads this, so I know what 'Da Man' thinks.-Bob, you can send me an e-mail about this if you don't want to leave a comment here.
Oh, and did anyone notice the wrong use of the word 'weather' a couple of paragraphs back? I was just checking WHETHER or not you were paying attention.
Thanks.
