Note: Once again, I would like to remind everyone who is reading this that I'm not cool enough to own any of the characters I write about, in any of their forms. They belong to Bandai, Naoko Takeuchi and a bunch of other people/companies. This is a fan fiction, loosely based on some dreams I had following the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon live action TV show. On with the tale...
*********************************************************
Questions swarmed like angry bees in my head while I ran after the other girls. My feet seemed to move independently of my body, as if acting on their own accord. This had never happened before. I remembered Mama telling me about making friends... but did that mean following people she had just met to a possibly dangerous situation? These were valid, important questions, but that didn't stop me. I couldn't stop, we were almost there. A plume of malevolent dark gray smoke floated toward us. The other girls stopped dead in their tracks and tensed. Rei looked at Makoto and nodded her head once. Makoto glanced back at me and frowned slightly. She turned back to Rei and returned the nod. I jogged up to Makoto.
"Do you two always go running toward the problem, instead of away like normal people?" I didn't mean the question to be insulting, but their behavior was just a little odd to me.
Makoto sighed. "It's like a job to us," she said. Her eyes scanned the cloud carefully, but to no avail. The smoke was incredibly thick. The look on Rei's face was downright scary.
The near silence was ripped apart by a woman's laugh. High pitched, and mean-sounding. Rei's face only got scarier. Her brow was creased, her mouth was open, but her teeth were nearly crushing themselves. Her eyes were wide, her pupils nearly pinpoints. She tensed even more, grunted savagely and charged head first into the cloud. Makoto called to her, then started running after. What could I do? Run home? Nah, that wasn't me. I was almost stupidly brave sometimes, and these were my new friends. Couldn't let them run into a situation like this without me? No way.
The cloud thinned out about 3 minutes later to reveal the strangest thing I had ever seen. A flower, about 2 meters in height with a human face, chest and arms was standing in the middle of the street. It saw the three of us and let out this weird screaming yell sound. It's arms became long vines which it lashed out at us. I tried to roll to the right, but got caught by another vine. It seemed like they had started sprouting from all over the monster's body. My heart was pounding in my ears. What in the world was this thing? And what about the others? I crouched low on the balls of my feet and looked around for them. Where had they gone? I jumped to my feet and scanned the area. The flower-person creature had moved further down the street and was laying waste to a car, making a sound undeniably like a echoing giggle in the middle of a wind storm. But no sign of Makoto and Rei. No sign at all. I ran at the monster, screaming. In my mind the voice of reason was screaming itself hoarse, but I didn't listen. I usually don't. My legs burned, my entire body urging me to stop. I stopped, but only to look around again. No Makoto, no Rei, only a large scorch mark on the pavement. I turned back to the monster and ran toward it again. It moved with a ridiculous amount of speed.
"Haruka, stop!" I stopped again and turned around. Two girls in tight outfits with colorful bows, skirts and collars stood down the street, behind me. I heard a sound from the monster, and turned around just in time to catch a vine to the head. Everything seemed to slow down and I fell. Everything went black and still.
A soft voice was calling to me. Mama? Had Mama come back? The black faded to gray, and the gray slowly began to lighten. I realized my eyes were closed and tried to open them. The sudden light stung my eyes and I quickly shut them again with a groan. Someone was holding my head, and it felt nice. My head then decided to make it's presence known, and loudly. It was all I could do not to vomit with the pulsing throb in my temples.
"Oh, thank Kami-sama..." That sounded kind of like that happy girl I had met at school. What was her name? It hurt to think, so I tried to open my eyes a bit. It hurt a lot less. I opened them all the way and looked around. A girl with blue hair was standing off to my right with the girl with a green skirt I had seen earlier. On my left was the girl with the red skirt. I tried to turn my head to look to see who was holding me, but the pain sent my eyes shut again. All I had seen was a tendril of blond hair.
"Do we need to take you to the hospital?" The voice was soft. Sounded a lot like Ami-chan's, welcoming and friendly.
"Why did you go running toward the youma?" That voice I didn't recognize, but it was harsh and angry.
"No, I'm... okay... just help me... up." I felt arms and hands push and pull me into a semi-standing position. My head swam, but hurt a lot less now. I was able to open my eyes again. The street was hazy, but I could see well enough to tell that whatever it was, it was gone. I looked at the girls around me, fighting the urge to scream. They were dressed very odd and seemed to give off some sort of... energy. I couldn't place or name it, but it felt familiar. Strangely, it felt like home. Like destiny. Though it occurred to me that I had no idea what destiny felt like. I laid my head the palm of my hand and took several deep breaths.
"What happened to Makoto... and Rei-chan?" I searched the faces of the girls. They seemed to know what was going on. I, on the other hand, was clueless. The blond moved to stand in front of me, and the others moved to flank her on the left and right. I tensed, fearing for my safety. Did they think I was some sort of threat too?
"I am Sailor Moon. This is Sailor Mercury, this is Sailor Mars, and this is..." She was motioning to each girl in turn, but the one with the green skirt cut her off. Her face was dark. I could feel the blood drain from my face. Lightning crackled the air around her. I tried to swallow, but found a huge lump in my throat.
"I am Sailor Jupiter." She was sizing me up with a stare that told me she could see past my skin and into my very soul.
"I... I am Tenoh Haruka." My voice came out soft and a little shaky. "I wanted to protect my friends... tell me, have you seen them?" My nerve came back, remembering the look on Makoto and Rei's faces before I had gotten knocked out. "Did they leave?"
The one in green ("Sailor Jupiter") looked to the others, then turned back to me. She opened her mouth to say something, but before sound could escape the one with funny-looking ponytails shrieked. All eyes flew to her. She bounced back a step before turning around and picking up a purple stuffed cat. "Luna...?" The one in red ("Sailor Mars", what a goofy name...) threw me a glare and stepped forward just one step.
"We have to go. Be more careful, these streets can be a little dangerous." I started to get mad. I did not deserve to be treated like a child! I gritted my teeth hard and nodded. "Your friends are safe, they left a while ago." She looked to the cat in "Sailor Moon's" arms and nodded to the others. I knew that nod. That was Rei's nod. With those fierce, haunting eyes... and the one in blue ("Sailor Mercury" if I remembered right) had the soft eyes of Ami-chan. But Ami didn't have short blue hair. I tore my eyes away from her and blushed. She was really, really cute, but I didn't want to seem rude by staring at her. With that, they turned and walked away together, talking in hushed voices. There were 4 people walking away, but I could have sworn I heard five voices. I shook my head wearily and started back home. So much for karaoke.
About a block away from my house, there was a small grocery/convenience store that sold gum, candy and soda. I stepped inside and grabbed a cold citrus drink. My head still hurt, and now I was confused. What had that all been about? And what was the deal with that tall flower-person? I paid and stepped outside into the fading light. A woman walked by, bowed, and handed me a colorful pamphlet for some sort of musical event. The kanji was hard to read, but the picture on the front stole my breath. A beautiful young Japanese woman sat in a chair with a violin in her hand. She held the bow casually and smiled the most charming smile I had ever seen. I had known I was of... different tastes then most people since I was young, but never in my life had anyone set my heart on fire like this before. I swallowed and folded the pamphlet up neatly to take home and translate. If this was for an event, I wanted front row seats. A face like that deserved a lot of attention, and I wanted to see her up close. To prove to myself that someone so beautiful was real. Just something about her caught and held me.
I got home, nearly done with my drink, and set my stuff down. The house seemed so very empty without Mama. I decided I would wait until the weekend to call her, unless she called first. There was a message from her on the machine, and a message after from Ami. She apologized for having skipped out on me that afternoon and asked if she could make up for it. I smiled and let my thought drift back to Sailor Mercury, and how much they had reminded me of one another. Maybe related I guessed, and set down to my homework. It didn't take long to do, so I set to the translation of the pamphlet. It was for a violin player named "Kaioh Michiru" and announced a live concert in the park on the following Friday. I grinned. I would make sure to be there. Michiru Kaioh. What a beautiful name. After throwing something together for dinner, I changed into a comfortable pair of trousers and a loose t-shirt. It was a style more geared toward men, but I pulled it off really well. I cleaned everything up and stared at my empty living room. "Forget this," I said out loud to myself. I walked into my room, grabbed my keys and headed outside to my bike. I was in very much bad need for a ride.
"She is, I'm sure!" Luna cried. Makoto and Rei shook their heads. Usagi just looked confused. They sat around the table at Crown.
"Legendary soldiers of the outer planets, Luna? I don't think so. I don't remember anything about that at all." Usagi shook her head and looked to Ami, who had been quiet the whole time. "What do you think, Ami-chan?" Ami blinked and looked up hurriedly, blushing. She hadn't been paying a bit of attention. Usagi smiled at her friend's blush and looked around. "If that's the case, we're going to need a bigger place to meet..." Makoto got to her feet.
"No need. She is not one of us. She couldn't be. She wouldn't have gotten knocked cold like that if she was." Her face was screwed up hard. She was dead set on this.
Luna was equally determined. "She is Mako-chan, and the next time we see her, I will prove it."
