I Can't Get Up
by David Pekrul
copyright 07-29-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I've fallen and I can't get up,
I'll die right here with any luck,
My life, it stinks and really sucks,
I try, but I cannot get up.

The people pass me by each day,
They look my way, as here I lay,
I call to them, but they won't stay,
They turn and hurry on their way.

They say that it is all my fault,
That I am not the nation's salt,
They say I'm full of hops and malt,
And landed here by pure default.

A common drunk is what I am,
But yesterday I was a man,
And with your help, again I'll stand,
And do the very best I can.

So I can be completely free,
To show the world what I can be,
But if they will not try to see,
Will you at least have faith in me?

I like the rhyme and meter in this-- the way it catches the feeling of the poor beggar/drunk repeatedly pleading to the rest of humanity going about their day. I can see him there, as you end the piece with him asking the simple question of their finding faith and compassion. My five year old son reached out to someone like this just last month on 53rd street in Manhattan, and their interaction was heartbreaking.

Bartender get that man a Pabst Blue Ribbon. The streets are full of of those that almost made it, yet the only thing that separates me from them is a mortgage and a Job. They have given up for the most part. You can only take the love with you, yet we go crazy chasing the golden calf! This write could get a large response and then again maybe not! Anthony
