" They're Here!"
by Anthony Lane Stahlhut (Age: 47)
copyright 08-03-2005

Age Rating: 4 to 127

We did not always have the wish,
it came on over the years.
Then we wondered if they'd ever leave,
and that became our greatest fear.

"She did this" and "She did that!"
"Tell her to quit touching my stuff!"
Every time was not that bad,
but some were a little rough.

They joined their clubs and played their games,
all the things school children do.
Borrow the car,"I won't go to far."
"Can I have an extra twenty,or two?"

We watched them grow and discover,
all the different things in this life.
The boyfriends came and then they would go,
then our oldest became a wife.

The first seemed to take forever,
all the sudden they all were gone.
I remembered the days use to fly by,
now the nights are so quiet and long.

It didn't take long for things to change.
Our children's family's began to grow.
Its Maw and Paw Paw's house this weekend,
that's where all the grandchildren go!

They run down the stairs and all through the house,
Maw screaming," Please slow down!"
We now relish the quiet, on the weekdays
for soon we know they'll be around.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining.
Each and every one of them are dear.
I love them all with all my heart,
but OH My God, "They're Here!"

Great closing line to a great poem about the joys of parent hood. It is better to be a grand parent isn't it?
All of the joy without the hassles.

One of your best writes.

I kept biting my nails, hoping, praying that this poem wouldn't falter! The more I read, the more I thought, oh, oh, this is too good and it's getting kinda' long! It will not have the bang I'm expecting and love in a poem. And then came the ending! And what an ending it was! By far, in my opinion, your best poem! You're becoming a very serious poet! This poem has everything I look for in a poem! Imagery (Excellent), fluidity (smooth), and structure (Excellent rhyming scheme)! All outstanding! You and David must stop hanging together! Excellent Job, Anthony Lane Stahlhut!!!!

I don't have grandchildren yet (I guess I'm still too young, lol), but my neighbour has four kids. After visiting with him and his wife, I am glad to get back to a quiet house.
You have expressed yourself well (as always) and I feel your pain. lol
