Tips and Tricks
The Commenting Community

Age Rating: 4 to 127

CC REQUIREMENTS

-You must be either a Gold or Silver member.

-You must be current in your dues.

-You must also submit fifteen (15) comments per month (30 days.) You cannot comment all in one day, or all in one week, or else it will not calculate properly. All calculations are done over a 30-day period.

-If your comments per month drops below the minimum, you will have seven (7) days to return it to the minimum, or over. If it’s been over seven (7) days and it isn’t back to the minimum, you lose CC logo.

-If you do not log in to PnP for more than a month (30 days) you lose your CC logo.

-If you are not current in dues, you will lose CC rank. You have seven (7) days to pay your dues from the day they run out. After those seven (7) days you will lose CC logo.

-If you do lose your CC rank, the special logo will be dropped from all your past, present, and future comments. When you become a CC again, you will get the logo back as your signature.

-If you let your logo drop more than 3 times, you will be dropped from the CC all together.

TIPS ON HOW TO COMMENT

-Be truthful, but kind. Don’t critique in a way that can be hurtful to the author. Say what you both like and dislike.

-You should offer editing help to the best of your abilities.

-You must read works from both the workshops AND the front page. You cannot stick to one.

-You must also read both adult and Jr. works. No favoritism.

-You cannot only read works by your friends. No favoritism.

-Minimum 55 words a comment.

-Give a personal opinion, but be careful not to ramble on to the point that you’re no longer discussing the work.

How do you join? That's the one thing it doesn't say, but the requirements and tips are very thorough, I can say that, at the least.

I can't believe that I let this go by without adding my commentary. It's primarily intended that those who come by "scratching their heads," wondering, "Well, all right, what's the big deal, here?" "What is this mysterious thing in red and who are these people and what do they do and why should I care....?" As we know, it's a group of dedicated members committed to helping improve each author's works--present and future--by offering critiquing commentary on submissions as well as by offering to help as possible. Your guidelines, above, are very good and are clear and concise. I think that one of the most important things an author can do is to listen to the critique carefully, recognize that it is seldom based on favoritism, likes and dislikes, and other personal considerations. If a member of The Commenting Community offers an editorial suggestion, it is only to the author's benefit and to the piece presented for it's improvement.
Your guidelines allow for that to happen. As I've mentioned elsewhere, this is an excellent framework!!

Hurrah to the CC!
I like the new rules, Sam. =]
I also love the logos!
I have a question, though.
If we are at camp, vacation, or something like that, and we can't get to a computer, do the rules still apply? Because, well, I'm going to camp for two weeks, and can't write, comment, etc. =[

Email me =]

I was wondering what you had to do to be able to put "of the Commenting Crusaders" on your comments! This was very informative.
The comments below were also helpful. I am glad to see so many being agreeable with constructive criticism. I have seen many pieces that have been commented on that the writer did not care enough to make the corrections.. simple spelling errors and such. Some of which were very good, save those errors. A shame.

Can I join Sam? I think it would be nice if we got people to not only comment MORE but to leave good, meaty comments. Also, we need to put up something like this for the commenting crusade!! So, can you email me to let me know what I have to do. And, do I just copy and paste the thing into my profile?

Anyway, good idea. I finally found out what the "C.C." thing was for! (I was always curious about what it stood for...)

Byes,
Haley

This was to me so true. A lot of people I noticed leave really short comments. I don't like explaining how I got the answer on state tests because I showed my work or I just don't feel like writing it down. But when it comes to literature and poetry, I am (sometimes)long wended. I plan on joining. Sounds like fun.

I don't know about a club, but I agree with the premise of your commentary. I also would note that when honest comments are given, the writer should hold back the urge to write back and plead why their work is better than a negative appraisal given. I have found some writers to get frankly angry and resentful. There should be no place here for that kind of behavior. We should take our criticism at face value, and not personally.

Jim

Sorry I had to do that. I want to join your club if you think I qualify. I try to comment on most that I read, but sometimes the poems are to deep. I myself, try to write poems that can be easily understood. There are some messages below the surface, but I feel that if I have to read the poem with a dictionary at my side, it takes away from the pleasure. I think that sometimes writers try to use too many "Big" words and it takes away from the readers enjoyment. I love all the friends that I have found here, you included. This is a great Idea and I want to support that! Thank you, Anthony

This is cool!

I think that this is a great idea. It will encourage those who do want to take poetry seriously and will enhance the poetry experience for both members and visitors alike. I think we owe it to our small community, as well as to ourselves to be better commentators, better poets and better brothers and sisters as well. I would like to join C.C.

Someone who knows what they are doing can easily get the HTML code for that badge, or any other image for that matter. Personally, I try to leave thoughtful comments on people's works when I can. Some works only need a short comment. I once wrote a comment on a story that I think was actually longer than the story itself!Sometimes if I can't think of a good comment for someone's work, I simply won't comment. I hate two word comments, both in giving them, and receiving them. I would actually prefer getting a long negative comment rather than a two word positive comment.I think comments have become better lately, but there's still a lot of room for improvement.

hold on, I'm a bit confused.
you don't have to join c.c.?
I mean, you can just put 'member of c.c' on ur page?

08-07-2005 Debra Rose

This is a good idea, Sammy! I'm definitly joining the CC. :)

There have been a lot of pleas to make comments deeper adn more meaningful in the past, but I don't think there's ever been an idea like this. I think this will help a lot. :)

Hi Sam,

I edited in the link for you. However, if you edit the article the HTML that you showed for the link will disappear.

Also, I'd suggest that you hand out the code in an email to anyone who wants to join. Otherwise some may join by putting the image on their page but not comment any better.
