Bless The World, Not Just The U.S.A
by Mary -BrytEyz- Ball (Age: 38)
copyright 09-25-2001

Age Rating: 7 to 127

Why is it we always see so clearly
just what we SHOULD have done
and not what we should do instead?

Why is it that nightmares have strayed
to fill now our thoughts in the day
instead of only what we dream in bed?

Why have monsters come to life
and given the "Boogie Man" a face,
letting him walk in among the living?

Why have some men turned to hatred;
Tell me, why do so many seek to take
when we all know happiness is in giving?

I wish there was a way, far away from war!
Yes, I wish there was some other option
to fix the mess we find ourselves in.

Then again I wish we could go back,
turn the hands of time to before 9-11,
and we could have never let it happen.

Is it only children that forgive and
so easily forget their pain;
Is it only children that can't pre-judge?

I envy their wide eyed innocence
and wish I could make it my own,
But my jaded mind just won't budge

From now on, wherever I go
I'll be looking over my shoulder
and watching the person next to me...

Slightly afraid a short distance away,
I'll wonder if they're watching me back,
curious if there's good or bad in ME!

I'm angered at the senseless violence
that was committed in New York,
and I pray for the victims there.

I'm also saddened at the retaliation
that bigots blindly aim at Muslims
and Arab Americans everywhere.

An eye for an eye, I once read,
and a tooth for a tooth as well;
but only for the GUILTY ones.

What happened to the phrase
"Innocent until proven guilty",
Are we hastily loading our guns?

There are police in our cities
that keep the criminals in check,
this is something that we need.

And armies "police" the world,
this time to overcome terrorism,
and are deployed with great speed.

Let the average American
do what it is we can for good,
and leave the policing to the others.

Let the average American join
hands with our neighbors to help,
and treat them just like brothers.

And if we choose to pray,
let's not pray to win some war
or for God to be on OUR side.

If we pray, please pray this way...
"God help the WHOLE WIDE WORLD
and set their minds and hearts right.

Let the badness that has happened
not repeat on some other day,
let it never happen to ANYONE again.

Please help the world keep
this feeling of unity we've found,
and let everyone remain our friend.

Please help the blind hearts to see
and open their eyes to love.
Help the world on each and every day.

Bless the victims, their families,
the rescuers, and the rescued as well.
God, bless the world, not just the USA!"

*sets her political beliefs aside for hardcore analysis of the poem* your poem conveys a real passion for the subject, truly an admirable poem ^_^ I would work on rhythm and meter, but other than that a great piece ^^

Mary,
I wish I had been as coherent after the attacks as you have proven yourself to be. In my youthful vigor, my pain, my fear, I demanded we rush to arms, destroy all and hand the empty lands to Isreal. If you can't tell I'm raised Jewish. (Now Jewish/Pagan/Buddhist/whatever else I qualify as O.o )

And you know...I believe you would like a lot of Dali Lama (sp?) quotes. One from a calander of Buddhist words of wisdom in the office at work says: "We of the world are a global community, and therefor have a duty to treat each other as such."

And the question of good or evil inside...there is both conflicting sides within us, but to question and search is the first step...to admit the second, and to change, the third. Another quote from the calender? "We can change; our ultimate nature is pure."

It is refreshing to hear as open of a mind as yours, especially on such a matter that arises such thoughts of hate.

Forever,
Debra Rose

I'm humbled not only by the number of the responses, but the depth of them as well. Thank you so much for taking time to read and respond so wonderfully to my work. I'm glad I've touched a chord here. It's nice to know I'm not alone in my views at times. As far as others being paranoid about me (Nan) I can see it some of the faces staring at me, especially at an airport. Without my make up and if my hair is straight... the Filipina and Cherokee shine thru proudly... nationalities that unfortunately get mixed right in with other "darker skinned" races (which btw, should not be judged for that sole reason anyway!!!).

I've seen people from India being harassed by the public since 9-11 and it shames me to think I belong to the same human race that's so obviously bigoted, racist, and rediculous at times. People from India had NOTHING to do with it, especially if they were born HERE! And further... MOST people from Pakistan and Aphganistan didn't either, just a small handful.

It's good to be cautious, but paranoia is something else all together.

Ok, I'm sure I've rambled on enough. I'll step down from the soap box now.

Take care all,
Mary

****I'll wonder if they're watching me back,

Oh boy... that *is* something to think about.

And AMEN to 'god bless the world'. God/Supreme Being/ALlah/??? is certainly not going to be choosing sides.

An excellent write Mary, one that I agree with.
It is in the hearts of many that one day there will be total peace and harmony in the world, I hope that that day comes soon. Life is short enough without violent people causing death.

Mary, there are so many good people in this world and this tragedy has shown us courage, love, fellowship and caring. Sometimes we go along in a rut, complaining over little things that are almost inconsequential. Suddenly, the world collapses under our feet, it can be a world disaster or a personal disaster. Hopefully we learn to live more fully, love more deeply and give more easily. Distrust will be a terrible consequence, but perhaps it will be unescapable. I say a little prayer that all the goodness shown by all the wonderful people will help everyone to get through the terrors and face the world of tomorrow.
