Small, Broken Prayers

No words come to express
the pain I feel...
just small, broken prayers
from shaking lips
and salty tears.
When did our family fall apart?
When did my uncle go away?
Why did my aunt just disappear?
Does my sister still
remember her son?
And how much longer will I hold on,
When I know
that some of us don't make it?
"You have to learn to step over the bodies...not all of us make it."
Dedicated to those who never made it, and those who had to leave a loved one behind....

I relate to this alot. I told my mom I wish I had a big family becuz I'm still a little jealous of my friend who is mexican and she had her 15th birthday celebration (an equivelant to a sweet 16) and My mom just said "You do have a big family, they're just...not in one place." I only met my grandpa once and he is still living, but his mom won't let my mom speak with him because she is adopted. It sucks. They hate each other but divorce is against his beliefs, so basically he has a lot of money and she's ill so they're just waiting for one another to die.
This is hitting me hard right now. My friend's daughter was just diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening blood disease called ITP. Learnng to live life on life's terms. Not easy!
Indeed a tragic moment in your history. Your passion and fervor surface loudly and clearly. "When I know that some of us don't make it?" This sentence is so telling, since you use it as a "today," reference. I feel the pain and sorrow....
This is a nice short poem. It has an excellent theme and flows very well. As to the content: as we get older we learn that we do leave behind those we loved or hated, as well as those who did not care too much for us or cared too much. There are very few of my friends left and none of those I loved passionately. I have learned.
