Are you having a bad school day?
by Euna P. (Age: 15)
copyright 08-28-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

If your bad day is because of school, read this.
In Korea, this is how one girl my age (12) studies. (In Korea, she's 13). Her name is Hi-jong. Hi-jong wakes up at 4:00 am or within a half an hour range of that. After a breakfast of spicy soup and rice, she studies for school, until she has to leave. She makes sure that she doesn't forget anything, not even the scribbled-on scrap of paper from yesterday. She hikes her tote bag onto her shoulder, and catches the tram going past her school.
At school, she goes to her first class; an hour-and-a -half of intense study. She goes to her second class; an hour-and-a-half of a test. She is determined to score high, and anything below 100% is a failure, even on a quiz. As Hi-jong goes to her third class, she meets up with several friends and discusses the test until the third class. Third class is another hour-and-a-half of intense study. Now it's time for lunch. She takes her bag and goes to the cafeteria, where she compares the notes she took in class with her friends. The afternoon passes in more or less the same way. At 5:00pm, she jumps on the tram going toward her tutor, or cram school, depending on the day, and meets several other students who take the tutoring lesson or cram school with her.
The tutor is strict, and they study hard for several hours. Cram school passes the same way as school, but takes less time. It is about 10:00 pm when she gets home, and now she has dinner. After dinner, she does her homework. She goes to sleep at 12:00am, give or take an hour.
This is what she does Monday through Friday. Saturday, Hi-jong takes another half day of school, and goes to her tutor again. She goes to sleep at about 10:00pm today. Sunday, she wakes up fairly early, about seven or eight, and goes to relax for an hour or so with her friends before going to study again for a while, but today is basically her free day. This is her typical week. On exams week, it's much the same, except she comes home from her tutor at 3:00am every day, and studies for an hour. She grabs an hour's sleep, and goes to her next exam day. Sunday of that week, she lazes the entire day. Hi-jong goes by this motto that is popular in her school. 'Seven hours of sleep, you are a loser and a failure. Six hours of sleep, you are failing school. Five hours of sleep, you are in the lower class. Four hours of sleep, you win. Three hours of sleep, you succeed, and are a winner in life.'

And you thought YOU had it tough.

Boy, am I thankful now.
I cannot believe some kids have to work so hard!
And I thought my school life was hard....

Oops, I accidentsally emailed you. Sorreh. ^^; So late at night and I am tired. But, as I said, it is really good, and certainly makes me feel better about my day. Even when everyone seems to hate me.
