Based on the life of Duane 'Dog' Chapman, "The Bounty Hunter"
His real name is Duane but they all call him Dog,
If he’s after you, don’t try to run,
He works with his brother, his nephew and wife,
And also with Leland, his son.
Tough on the outside but tender of heart,
He captures his prey every day,
And when they are taken he councils in love,
To teach them so they will not stray.
A born-again Christian, a man of his word,
With a message from God up above,
“Treat each as your neighbor and all as your friends,
If they’ve wronged you then show them your love’”.
He was raised by a preacher but then went astray,
With a bike gang was “Sergeant-at-Arms”,
And one fateful day he was charged with a crime,
He was jailed, though he caused no one harm.
After serving his time he was given a challenge,
“Find this fugitive; bring him back in”,
It took him a week and he captured the guy,
And from then, he just knew he could win.
So now he’s a hunter and ‘fisher of men’,
A strange combination it seems,
But when God took a sinner and entered his heart,
He was saved, now they're on the same team.

Michael, I agree with what you're saying, but Dog isn't merely just hunting down criminals. He's saving them! These people sell drugs, do drugs, and if they don't straighten up soon, these men will die somewhere on the streets. Dog was like them, until he was placed in jail, which got him over his drug addiction, and got him on a cleaner, safer path. Dog is treating the others the way he would want to be treated. After the fugitive is captured, they're allowed a cigarette, and Dog and his son Leland have given the shirts of their back to put on a shirtless man. They are also treated with respect. Dog and his family speak with these men like equals, which they are. They're just equals who have done some bad things. I agree with you about not hearing the criminals version of events (which happens 99.9% of the time on the show.) Dog is keeping Hawaii safer for his own children to grow up in, and others. Slowly, he's earning a reputation, be it good or bad, because he's helping these people. God set him a path, and he's following it. You should really see the show. It's amazing to watch.
Sorry David that I'm replying to this on your piece and not through e-mail (which I will do.) I just think what Dog is doing is amazing, and deserves a public reply for others to see.
Okay, am i the only one who sees a problem with this? I never saw the show, but from what i gathered from the poem, he was raised by religious nuts, 'strayed from the faith', joined a biker gang, got arrested for a crime he never comitted, went to jail, and now he hunts criminals with his happy family. This isn't a transition from bad to good, it's a transition from good to bad!!! As far as i see, it, he never did anything wrong BEFORE he went to jail (being in a biker gang isn't wrong, if that's the hobby you want to take on, it's no different from being on a hokey team!)and now he HUNTS men!!? Even if those men comitted crimes, those crimes can pretty much be blamed on society. (what happened to treat others the way you want to be treated?) Who are we to say what's right and what's wrong. We'd like to think there's a line, but there really isn't. (Why do you think lawers make so much money!?)
Like Mike said, jails are meant to 'reform' people, but even after those people 'reform', they never get to see the light of day! Is that justice?
Anyway, sorry this comment is so long, but I'm just so sick of people dissing criminals without ever seeing anything beyond the crime.
A lot of prison inmates seem to find their redemption in a concrete cell, and there some of the most heartfelt poetry in the world is written. It's too bad a lot of these kinds of men who actually change never see the sky again.
Dog is one of the best shows I've ever seen, because of how he came to be. Going to jail, I think, was the best thing for him to see his errors and to be a better man. More poems should be written about television heroes. Good job.
