When I Must Go

  When I Must Go

It all started in the womb,
before I was alive I know.
An empty egg just getting ready
for the time when I must go.

Then before the first grade,
I stood there ready again.
For the doors of school to open up,
so they would let me in.

I studied hard to pass the tests,
my diligence I must show.
So that on graduation day
I'd be ready when I must go.

I started college in the fall,
tried to learn a solid trade.
Learn the difference of right and wrong
in the decisions that I made.

I met a girl in college Lord,
her face was all a glow.
She has become so dear to me,
please protect her when I must go!

I must travel across the world,
defend children of another land.
Why must they kill the innocent,
I just don't understand.

Terrorist have attacked us here
where it will happen next I don't know.
I've said my prayers and stand in faith,
ready for when I must go.

I have fought in a war where many died.
I hope it makes sense in some way.
I pray my lord to give me strength
and to help me understand some day.

I'm older now and near the end,
so many lessons this life did show.
I tried to live by your design
so I'll be ready when I must go.

My children are grown and married now
seven grandchildren and more to come.
This life I've lead has been great,
regrets, I truly have none.

So in the end, when you take me,
I hope my actions did show.
I loved my God and family,
and I'm ready, when I must go!

I found this truly touching. College, collage or whatever. Truly touching.

this was a very nice poem! did you really fight in a war?

The message here is beautiful and poignant. The speaker on this piece at least has fulfilled part of his life doing the things he wanted or needed to do. Some of the young soldiers defending our freedom overseas will not have that opportunity. What a shame! Great write. You misspelled college.

oop!! You spelled college wrong. You spelled it 'collage'.

This is truly inspirational. One of my favourites. Our whole life seems to consist of leaving; leaving the womb, leaving school, leaving our parents, and then leaving our jobs (like me in just 9 weeks!, sorry, I digress) The ultimate leaving is when we leave this world, then for those who have put their trust in God, the great arriving at His kingdom.
