Live from the Moon
Chapter 14
by Beverley McInnis
copyright 09-25-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Bobby was with friends during recess break, when one of Mary-Anne’s friends came running over, yelling for him to help. Bobby dropped his hockey cards on the ground and followed her, at a dead run.

“What happened?” Bobby yelled, running hard after the girl.

“Mary-Anne’s mad! She’s killing Melody!” She yelled back breathlessly, dodging kids and playground equipment as she raced towards the back of the school.

Bobby knew they were close when he saw a group of students standing in a circle. He glanced around and noticed there were no teachers. Not surprising since they were in the back of the school where no one usually went. Bobby pushed through the crowd and saw Mary-Anne hitting another girl, over and over in the face. Blood gushed out of the girl’s nose and her eyes were closed. The girl’s head swung limply from side to side and it was apparent, she wasn’t conscious. Bobby grabbed Mary-Anne from behind and pulled her arms hard backwards.

Mary-Anne, NO!” He yelled firmly, holding her strong while she fought hard to escape, “NO!”

He looked up at everyone and sought out the girl who had come for him.

“Lori, run and get a teacher. Tell them we need an ambulance,” he looked directly at Mary-Anne’s friend and saw her hesitate, “Do it!”

Mary-Anne cursed at Bobby; screaming obscenities that would have made dock workers blush and threatened to kill him if he didn’t let her go. Bobby held tightly, gritting his teeth as she managed to stomp on his toes a few times and bite into his hands.

“Right here, Miss Taylor!”

A teacher broke into the crowd. Looking quickly at Bobby struggling with Mary-Anne then at the unconscious girl on the ground, she quickly put on gloves from the first aid kit she was carrying and applied pressure on the girl’s nose. Another teacher following behind placed a blanket over the girl and ordered all the children back into the school. Lori stood to the side, unwilling to leave terrified over what had unfolded in such a short time.

“An ambulance is on its way!” A third teacher yelled as he came upon the scene, “Is she awake yet?

No but someone needs to help Bobby,” Miss Taylor replied back, “I think he’s taken all he can.”

Bobby shook his head no and pushed backwards against the hands reaching out to assistance him.

“No! Leave me alone! I’m the only one that can calm her down,” he said rapidly, out of breath, “She’s not biting anymore. But she will if you try to touch her.”

The teacher reluctantly stood to the side, unsure if he should interfere or trust this child’s judgment. In the end, he decided to trust Bobby’s judgment and watched Mary-Anne slowly regain calm.

Sirens were heard in the distance, growing stronger with each passing minute. Miss Taylor managed to stop the bleeding but the girl remained unconscious. Mary-Anne stopped struggling and fell limp into Bobby’s arms. He held her tight as she sobbed loudly, gaining sympathy from no one but Bobby. He knew. He knew that she hated herself when things like this happened and was always so sorry after. He knew she never wanted to hurt the girl but something happened or was said which set off her bells and she came out fighting.

The paramedics arrived and with Miss Taylor accompanying her, the girl was loaded onto a stretcher and into the ambulance. As it drove away, the male teacher looked down at the two children and barked loudly, “Into my office right now! Both of you!”

Lori jumped as the teacher swung around and barked, “And that includes you too! Now!”

Bobby placed his arm protectively around Mary-Anne and slipped his hand into Lori’s small one, then walked with them both to the school.

“It’s going to be OK, I promise,” he said quietly, “I’ll make sure of it.”

Robert, I somehow missed Chapter 13...and that explains where Mary-Anne's anger is triggered from. Didn't realize this until I was doing some editing of the story. Sorry for the confusion.

Poor Mary-Anne; she's obviously got a great deal of problems. I'm off to the next chapter.
