Retirement Day

  Retirement Day

I wrote this for my retirement day.

My final day, I’m outta here,
And I am full of happy cheer,
But leaving all my friends behind,
Seems very cruel and so unkind.

Twenty-six years behind this desk,
Was such a chore, but for the best,
I stayed here for my family,
Now I can go, I’ve been set free.

My first day off, I’m sleeping in,
Then I’ll awake with such a grin,
And think of how to spend my time,
I’ll play some golf to help unwind.

Then on day two I’ll clean my car,
And drive it to the local bar,
Where I will buy myself a beer,
And think about my past career.

I’ll wash my mind of all I learned,
And all my notes I think I’ll burn,
Then look ahead for what’s to come,
And learn to beat a brand-new drum.

But I’ll remember all of you,
As on this day I bid adieu,
You’ve been my friends for many years,
But like I said, ”I’M OUTTA HERE !!”

I hope by the thirtieth day you are not scrambling for something to do. I retired and by the next semester I wanted back in the classroom and started substitute teaching. I missed the kids and the commaderie. That was ten years ago and I am still teaching!

You go boy!!!! How many more years do I have? Dang it!!!!! Sounds like you need a second job though. It gets kinda boring at home. Trust me! I'm unemployed right now!

I am so happy for you...I am very content in my retirement, even though I didn't know I was retiring when I moved South. You sound so upbeat and exuberant, I wish you as much fun, freedom and joy in your retirement as I have had in mine...Congratulations!

Tender, yet not disgustingly sentimental. Nice sober thoughts in typical fine Pekrul style!
Good luck! We expect even more writing now!!

Though I'm not the one retiring, I could not help to feel moved by the words you employ here. It reminded me of my last year in High School. I was tired of studying and couldn't be happier when I graduated, but that meant that I had to leave my friends and teachers behind. Congratulations on your retirement. Get ready for the tears and the mixed feelings! I would extend the last stanza to a fifth line, this would give it more of a bang at the end. Great write!
