A Case of Abuse...
Chapter 4
by Robert Betts (Age: 61)
copyright 09-26-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Dr. David Morris examined the clipboard as he started for his next patient. He stopped dead. "Ms. Harris, may I have a word with you," he called to Mary.

As Mary walked up, she arched her shoulders, "It's what they want."

"Are they serious? A full gyno on a five-yr old; Heck I don't have a spacula that small."

Andrea Whiting joined them, "Listen, I have a court order here. We expect you to perform a thorough examination. Time, as you might imagine, is critical and so do the best you can. Check for diseases, sperm and any structural damage which would indicate abuse."

Dr. Morris glared at Andrea, "...or you'll get another Dr. for all your cases, right?"

Andrea smiled, turned, then went to sit next to Tim.

The first shriek resounded in the waiting room. Tim galvanized into action and flew through the alcove door, stopped and looked down the hallway. By the second scream, he had radared in on the room and rushed to it. He shoved the door open.

"What are you doing? What are you doing to Jill?"

Dr. Morris turned just in time to be met by a full knee-level tackle, sending him sprawling. Andrea, the officer and Mary swarmed into the room. Officer Daily grabbed Tim and pulled him from under the Doctor where he'd found himself.

"Listen kid, If you don't calm down I'll have to put cuffs on you." Daily dragged Tim from the room, while he screamed "You leave her alone, You leave my sister alone!"

Sam, where are they? It's been two hours now. I want my babies, Sam. I want them," Sherry cried.

Sam picked up the phone and dialed after locating the number for Social Services in the phone book.

"Our office is now closed," said the recording. "Our hours are from 9:00 to 5:00, monday through friday. If this is and emergency you may call the abuse hotline at..."

Andrea looked at Dr. Mullens. "Well?"

David sighed, "No signs of abuse, everything is... intact."

"When will we know about disease and sperm."

"A couple of days for the lab results."

"Ok, have to make a call. I'll call back tomorrow to see if you have anything."

Well, we got another boarder, "said Linda Mullens as she hung up the phone.

"Great, a bit more loose change."

"I'd still like to have one of my own."

"Are you kidding? Doctor bills, dentist, and all that, plus not a cent for food unless we earn it. You nuts? We got the best of all worlds, kids, cash and no bills."

"It's still not the same Rick. I'd like to give you a little "Rickey."

"Actually right about now I've got something else in mind that you could give me."

Andrea opened the car door and motioned for Jill to come out. She had decided after the ordeal at the doctor's office to keep the two in separate foster homes.

Rick Mullens was gazing out the window "Wow, she sure is pretty," whispered Rick.

Linda rolled her eyes and sighed, "Try to mind your manners Rick."

Well, I'm not sure how to comment. Obviously this makes me sick! I also have a hard time believing that this really happens. I know the rules of the game and the things that are supposed to happen in certain order. There was no in home investigation, and there is supposed to be rather convincing evidence before any "exams" are done...and NEVER a full gyno on a five year old! *sigh* Oh well, whether this is only your idea of what happens in this situation or if it really happened this way... I'm not sure so I don't know how to respond. it's not supposed to happen this way, I'll say that much.

(by the way...it doesn't matter when it happened...it happened and it was wrong...so you don't need to answer my question in the comments around the date)

Bob, I reread your article from beginning to part 4 - thinking more on the entire situation.

I fail to see anywhere that the social worker actually did a home visit and parent interview. Did they talk with the teachers? See if there were any behavioural changes. It looks as if the basic steps were completely ignored and a "knee-jerk" reaction occurred. Remove the children and submit them to painful traumatic exams to prove or disprove an allegation.

It was wrong, the sequence of events. If proper interviews had been carried out, I highly doubt it would have gone to this limit as it would have shown no need to further investigate.

That is where the need for properly trained staff (including police, hospitals, social workers) is important and protocal. Because with the ending you have, I fear what we will read in the next installement and that angers me too...that an allegation not properly investigated resulted in trauma towards an innocent child.

Very well written Bob and very sad. I'm curious, how long ago did this all happen? And I also hope the person who ordered the full gyno on a 5 year old was taken to task for that. As a nurse, I've had to deal with real sexual abuse cases (not alleged) including with very young children and I must say, we never did a full gyno on any child. There were and are other ways to obtain what information is needed - both for court and medical purposes - which are not as intrusive to the child. That order definitely did great harm - physically and psychologically - to the child.

wow, i HOPE IT GETS STRAIGHTENED OUT

This is scary stuff, for a world that is supposed to be civilized. There must be a better way....
