The Death of My Buddy

Blind in one eye, the other failing too
A heart murmur, but I was unaware
Loved me, no matter what I didn’t do
When no one else cared, my buddy was there
Sad each work morning when I went away
Excited to see me – such a big deal
Mock bites for me, his tiny teeth in play
I cannot explain this loss that I feel
Love never diminished, as human’s can
And as his health did thru his eight brief years
Lived for my voice and the touch of my hand
Now that he’s gone, there just aren’t enough tears
I don’t know whether a pet has a soul
An afterlife for dogs or men somewhere
Unless I go there, well, I’ll never know
But part of me’s forever with Pierre

Many thanks to each of you who responded to my poem and also to those who share the loss of a beloved friend. You are very kind. In this time of terrorism, when innocent people are slaughtered by the thousands in the name of some false god, it may seem ironic to mourn a mere pet. However, although I am a Christian, I believe that God smiles down upon all of his creations, including our pets, and has a place for them in his sacred heart.
There is a saying that people have to go through so many dogs in their lives because dogs fulfill God's will quicker than people do. Since I live in a place where I have more than one dog, I watch them go through their life cycles at different rates. It always breaks my heart when one dies, even if there is another one there to take his/her place at the food bowl, they never take their place in my heart. A great poem. Jackie
Awwwwwwww, Lyle, this was so sad.
I have a dog called Toby and I do not know what I will do when he passes away. I love him to bits and I am sure that he does me too. I believe that dogs do have an afterlife, they are so kind and affectionate and loyal.
I am sorry that yours has gone to that afterlife, but I am sure that he will be waiting for you when the time comes.
A good write......
