The light was so bright and beautiful yet soothing, Lucien almost didn't want to leave this mysterious place he was brought into. However, he wanted to go back to Kaitlin; he knew she needed him as much as he needed her.

It was not time for him to be here.

When he finally opened his eyes, he thought he was still at the peaceful place filled with the bright light. Once his vision adjusted, however, he realized that he was in a hospital room. A loud, beeping noise reached his ears when he realized it was a heart monitor.

I'm hooked on a heart monitor, he realized. This is my heart beating . . . which means I'm human.

A deep breath escaped his lips as he became overwrought with emotion. For so many centuries, he hated himself for what he was; now he was given another chance at mortality. It was a miracle! A miracle! But how? Why? He'd never thought this would come to be . . .

"You're awake," a soft voice said.

Lucien turned his head to his right and smiled when he saw Kaitlin. "How long were you here?"

"I've been in and out of here for a week. That's how long you were in a coma."

Lucien smiled, licking his teeth--they felt normal. "Am I dreaming?"

"No." Kaitlin knew why he asked that question. "You're as human as the rest of us."

"How's that possible? I don't look like a decrepid 450 year old man, do I?"

Kaitlin laughed. "No. You look as dashing as ever--you just need a shave."

"That's something I have to learn how to do." Lucien frowned. "How am I human, though? I thought . . ."

"Jane and I looked into it. It's supposed to be some kind of folkloric legend, but it obviously turned out to be true. You made it very clear that you never willingly became a vampire, let alone knew it was happening until it was too late. Another thing we found out that a vampire can regain his or her humanity if he or she doesn't give in to the evil life as Mariam had. There's a catch though: that vampire has to kill the creature who transformed him or her."

Lucien frowned. "So if it was you or Jane that destroyed her, then--?"

"It wouldn't have worked. You would have remained a vampire."

Lucien sighed. "Then thank God it was me who destroyed Mariam." He did his best to fight the clear tears that streamed down his face. "It was not a big secret that I lived in misery. Had I not become human . . . I was going to ask you and Jane to destroy me . . . to bring me peace."

"I wouldn't have done so, and I doubt if Jane would have agreed to that." Kaitlin had a strong tone in her voice. "Even if you hadn't changed back to a mortal, I would have wanted to be with you. I've grown to love you very much, Lucien." Kaitlin brushed his hair back. "I'm in love with you."

Lucien smiled. "Then I suppose my humanity isn't the only miracle that's happened. I'm in love with you, too." He reached out to stroke her cheek, thinking how beautiful she looked as the sun reflected against her skin.

A few minutes later, Jane dropped in to find Kaitlin and Lucien kissing. Smiling, she walked away, knowing that they'd want to be alone.

Excellent! Well written, tightly written and flowing from beginning to end. I really enjoyed your story and love the ending!

I have to agree with Nan - I laughed over the comments he made about shaving. Yes, he wouldn't have not ever shaved with modern day razors.

The explanation really makes sense and ties it all together - how he fought being a vampire from the beginning, the love he and Kaitlan shared and the fact, he killed that nasty vampire. Excellent!

:-) thank you for the happy ending! And:

Kaitlin laughed. "No. You look as dashing as ever--you just need a shave."

"That's something I have to learn how to do."

Ah haha, rofl, of course! He was only 21 when he "died" and possibly had never shaved--certainly not with 20th century implements. :)

Well done, and we rest at last. Love is a wonderful thing, Natalie. Thanks for the great read!
