The guys were gathered in the bar again, drooling over the beautiful Crystal. Her top notes could almost shatter glass, voice as clear as a bell as she mined all the attention in the place.
There was a new face at The Trout Pond tonight. He was scaly-skinned and wearing a speckled tie, brown fedora with a red feather in the hat band. He wiggled himself onto a stool at the bar and asked the bartender if he had any pickled herring." No, no booze, I'm on the wagon, drying out you know, but some water would be just fine." He tipped the bartender a fin.
The boys were caught up in trying to figure out where this guy came from, he was too generous, to give a fin tip to the bartender for almost nothing, he was sure acting fishy .His bulgy eyes were fastened on Crystal as she undulated gracefully to the music, she looked as lovely as a mermaid and he seemed to be falling hook, line and sinker.
Over in the corner a quiet unassuming man sat playing a game of solitaire. He didn't seem to notice the group gathered on the other side of the piano. He was pale, as if he had been ill, or kept indoors. A little flick of the wrist, displaying cufflinks engraved K G , as he dealt another hand, hid the fact that he was cheating at the game. He seemed to just be passing time.
"Got anymore pickled herring there?"
" Yeah sure, do you want to start a tab?"
"Okay, put me down as "Red".
"Will do" the bartender agreed.
So now the boys had a name for the guy, checking him over they thought he dressed pretty flashy, and with his ogling Crystal, they figured pretty soon she'd be sporting a diamond pendant, if he had his way.
They wondered what kind of line he would use.
Crystal took her break, moving to the back of the room. She stopped for a moment and there was a little flash of light on the table as she passed the solitaire player. Then she went into the back room, done for the night.
Solitaire over, the quiet man got up and left.
The boys were still distracted with Red's gasping over the beautiful Crystal.
Suddenly the boss realized he had missed the solitary man's departure, swearing softly under his breath he told the guys to follow him,
Out onto the street in the dark, Chaser stayed in the shadows trying to ascertain where his prey had gone. There was a little old lady at the bus stop, so he asked if she had seen his friend.
If he's driving a Karhman Ghia he's heading to the cemetary" she stated " I would have asked him for a ride, since the buses are so slow and this being a small town it's safe enough to take a ride from a stranger, besides, he looked familiar. But who wants to go to the cemetery at night? Seemed kind of creepy to me".
"Yeah, another dead end " thought Chaser, " no place there to stash loot, especially 200 pounds of gold bullion (wonder what that would be worth on the market today) ".
To the boys he said "well, might as well tail him from there, can't spend our lives in the bar."
Clutch behind the wheel had the car purring, it ran so smooth when he drove. Shifty was moving around in the seats nervously as they all headed to the cemetery.
"Beanie boy, what are you doing?" Chaser demanded. Beanie was chomping on a handful of jelly beans, and scratching under his beanie at the same time, as if the friction would bring on a thought. "I'm thinking about where this guy would stash the loot. Whaddya say his name was ?"
"I think even the name I defended him with was an alias, he's had so many I can't be sure what his given name was Ken Gripper, Kevin Getting, Kent Greedie... He keeps the same initials though, cagey of him, K G, hmmm, did I make a funny?"
By the time the car made it to the cemetery there was no one around. Could they have been misled? They looked over the plots but there was no sign of a disturbance anywhere. The moonlight lit up the place as a cloud drifted past the moon and illuminated the dew on the grass. There were footprints leading to the mausoleum, nearby a bank of small boxes held the cremated remains of the dearly departed. The grand vault was an imposing structure of tyndallstone and the grey rock served to point out the solemnity of its' duties.
"The door has been opened, I bet he is still in there". Chaser entered the building and was followed closely by his henchmen.
"It's spooky, Boss" Shifty started to stammer, but before he could finish a voice from behind said
"I've got you all covered, my gun has a silencer, would you like to end up staying here before your time?"
"Whaddya want from us" Chaser swallowed hard, no longer chasing, tables turned, the persued now the aggressor.
"I've seen you shadowing me, Lawyer Chase" he addressed him with sarcastic reverence. " We both know why. I decided to let you help me, this time it'll be my way, not into the slammer like last time. I shudda known bettter than to hire a rainbow seeker, ambulance following, skirt chaser to defend me, I see you always want the easy money. Well, you came to the right place this time. I need you mugs to move something. My friend Morty had a great idea with the fake funeral for my dearly departed. I am really sad that he passed away, he was brilliant, I'm glad he took his cut at the time. I had quite a time getting the key for the vault with him dead, but his little songbird sister Crystal remembered me and knew what good partners we had been, I wudda done this sooner but she had trouble getting the key to me. Just gave it to me tonight at the bar, as a matter of fact. So this must be the drawer". He pointed to the plaque inscribed.....Kerry Gold. "Smart of him to use my initials so I wouldn't have any chance of being unable to find the right one. Four pallbearers can carry the coffin, the contents are spread out to even the load...Shoulders into it boys, if you cooperate you may end up with a share of the loot, but if not you'll be a deposit in the East River. I'm sure glad that you waited for me to get out of the slammer, I figured you would follow the bait and try to get your paws on the loot, played right into my hands. They don't call me Cagey for nothing."
