The Day I Got Drunk
by David Pekrul
copyright 10-06-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

The day I got drunk,
I thought me a thunk,
And said, "What a wise man, I am".
My 'wisdom' I shared,
Though nobody cared,
A Drunk with a vision is damned.

The visions I had,
Were really quite sad,
(I thought they were really quite wise).
The truth was quite plain,
They thought me insane,
I drank to my own demise.

The boys came in white,
I put up a fight,
I'd been to that place once before.
To Bellevue I went,
And time there I spent,
Inside of a locked iron door.

I sit in a cell,
And all is going well,
Three meals every day and a bath.
My 'wisdom' I share,
Though nobody cares,
I walk down my own garden path.

Your work has such a flow to it and they are such fun to read, I have to say it again I wish PnP had a favorites for it's members so I could save some of your work and go back and read it.

All are on a path for a reason. Where will we wind up? and is the journey the same as the destiny? I like the humor in this, though.

Your poem reminds me of a song, quite a funny song, too. Dr. Demento - They're coming to take me away.

Some drunken wisdom can actually spark something greater, if you think about it. It may not make sense to us, but our intoxicated friend speaks the truth, nothing but the truth, and we choose whether to listen or not.

I would hope that the poetic speaker in this poem is not the same individual as the actual speaker of the subject matter. It is a convention of poetry that the speaker in a poem is not speaking autobiographically. The comments on this poem seem to indicate that you are the drunk. I would doubt that.

Very funny David. Everybody thinks they are smart when they are drunk I think I am not sure but it is OK because you really are smart so drunk or not I will listen to what you have to say but one typo though> plan should be plain. Any way Good job. Thank you

I'll drink to that...or maybe I won't. This is a sobering thought or at least you will be sober when you get out! LOL This was nice to read before going to work. I think I'll stop at the pub on the way home and see if any of those boys in white want to dance(so to speak). Na, mom won't want me to be late and she fights real good. So I better just go home and take my medicine there! Anthony
