I was just rereading the poem and my comment and discovered that I forgot my most important observation on both the poem and the best still lifes. As your words so vividly portray, the best of still life paintings are absolutely alive and breathing with life. They are all about movement, the before and after that the observer's mind freely imagines. and so it is with your poem, Jim.
With tantalizing accuracy, you have painted in my mind's canvas the artistry that was a painter's masterful rendition of life in a still moment. One of my favorite artist is or was Monet, followed by Velazquez, Vermeer and last but not least, Rembrandt! Cezanne is not one of my favorites, but I was moved by your vivid description of his stills. Great job!
Its OK Gina...I think that is what Cezanne was thinking anyway. James you are growing as a poet and your knowledge of the arts is great. Keep that pen handy and let us see the marks it makes upon the paper. A painting of words! Anthony
Oh God please don't read my comment I actually took the time to look this up, a little late but still, (still he he) I did and now I know I was so horribly wrong, please don't read the next comment, K
it seems to me you are referring to a baby almost born but then it is not. I have had two miscarriages and four children but never a still born, I don't want to imagine what that might be like but I has crossed my mind every time I am pregnant, I love being pregnant, creating life, feeling it grow inside of me, I am sorry,if this is what this is about and if it is not then I am sorry for even bringing it up. You are very mysterious but that is why I read your writing. I can't get them all right huh? But I can't get them all wrong either, one of these days, one of these days... lol. Great write, good job, thank you
You have put your finger exactly on what makes Cezanne's paintings live. The low key vibrancy of color and the sometimes slightly jarring juxtapositions of his 'models' keep bringing one's eye back to the center of his pictures...His stills are wonderful as are his 'nature' portraits...You have painted a picture of one of his still lifes with your pen that is almost as spectacular as the painting it describes...I really like this James!
