Lita surveyed her friends, Amy, Mina, Serena, Rini, and Raye, who were each wearing an incredulous look on their faces. Lita had just gotten hold of a new boyfriend, Jordan, whom she had crazed after ever since she first met him. Jordan’s birthday was today, and she wanted to throw a surprise birthday party for him, but to do that, she would need the help of her friends, each of which was refusing to help. So she stood now, begging and coaxing them to give her a hand.
“Come on, you know I’ve had a crush on this guy for, like, ever! Now he’s finally gravitated towards me, and now I’m going to disappoint him by ignoring his birthday?!?! NO WAY!!! Please, I’m putting my hands together, please help me!”
Amy crossed her arms. “If you want me to forget to study for the unit test tomorrow, you must be crazy! Absolutely no way! Besides, you do remember that Jordan left me for you. I already forgave you for that, but it’s going to hurt me to help you throw a party for a guy that used to be with me.”
Mina turned her back. “The volleyball finals are tomorrow. There’s no way I’m going to miss practice. I’m the top player on my team, and if I miss practice today, I’m going to get kicked out of my team! So you can just forget it!”
Serena glared at Lita. “I have a date with Darien today, and he promised me that there’s something special in it. I am not going to offend him by not turning up and I love surprises, so there’s no way I’m going to miss my date!”
Rini pouted. “ Pu’s going to take me to see the Time Tunnel and how to use it. This is important for my training, and Pu is going away with Amara and Michelle right after my lesson. I can’t afford to miss this! It’s vital for my training. Do it yourself!”
Raye fumed. “ The temple’s holding a ritual in honor of my grandfather. It would break his heart if I wasn’t there to lead it. Lita, you are on your own!”
Lita started crying. She was devastated that she wouldn’t be able to hold Jordan a party. Seeing her despair, the Sailor Scouts softened a little. But they were still stubborn. Lita slid to the floor, and put her hands together. “Guys, I’m begging you. Maybe we can negotiate a schedule. We could do the party really early, then you could go wherever you want. Please, let’s talk this out.” Amy, Mina, Serena, Rini, and Raye sighed. “But it’s already 4 o’clock! We can’t hold the party ‘really early’!” Rini pointed out. “Please forget your plans, just for today. I promise I’ll do all your homework for the entire month!” Lita knew it was a rash decision, but she could see that she had no other choice, and that this promise would at least lure Serena.
Amy, Mina, Serena, Rini, and Raye all looked at each other. “Hold on just a minute” Serena looked at the others pointedly. They put their heads together, and after a heated discussion, turned to face Lita again.
“Okay, this is what we’ve decided. We’ll skip our plans today and help you, but you’ll have to do our homework for the month, and since Rini doesn’t go to school, you’ll have to take her to the park everyday. Since Amy doesn’t trust anybody with her homework, you’ll have to make her sandwiches every time she needs one, and you’re going to have to somehow make up what we’ve all missed. Deal?”
Lita’s eyes bulged. “Are you kidding me?” she screeched. “I can’t do all that!” “That’s the deal. You’re going to make me break my grandfather’s heart, Rini’s going to miss a vital part of her training, Mina’s going to lose her influence in her team, Amy’s going to have to miss her study time, and Serena’s going to miss her special date. You’re going to have to pay the price, Lita.” Raye was firm.
Lita mulled it over. It didn’t seem too much, now that she thought about it. Rini’s probably going to have to go back to her time soon, and Darien would understand, as would Raye’s grandfather. Amy was too smart to fail her exam, and Mina was too good at volleyball to mess up. So… “Okay, it’s a deal! Let’s hurry, Jordan’s going to come home in 5 hours, so we have to get moving.” The girls dashed off to Jordan’s apartment.
It was now 8 o’clock. The girls were exhausted. They had been decorating every single thing in the whole apartment, every room, and every single decoration had cost a lot. Lita was ecstatic, though. Even if the decorations had cost about a hundred dollars, she knew it would be worth it to see Jordan’s face when he would walk in. Now the girls were busy mixing up a huge chocolate cake with orange icing on top, with billions of assorted cake decorations piled onto the icing. After about 40 minutes, the cake was finished, and they set it onto the already overflowing dining table.
“Okay guys, when he comes in, gather in a circle, yell surprise, Mina, you turn on the lights, and then you guys part in the middle, and I walk through to Jordan. Do you understand?” Lita had been drilling this procedure into them for the last 20 consecutive minutes. “ALRIGHT!!! WE UNDERSTAND!!!!” Raye exploded. The other girls were feeling no less, especially Amy. Being forced to help her best friend throw a surprise birthday party for a guy that had been with her hurt her so much. She was seething inside, even more than Raye. Only her care for her best friend kept her from strangling Lita half to death. With gritted teeth, she crouched behind a sofa that Lita indicated for her to hide behind. The good thing is that Lita doesn’t know that Jordan’s birthday is actually in August, not in December. Lita’s too romantic to realize that Jordan doesn’t have the same birthday as her. Amy thought. She knew that it was wrong for her to not warn Lita, but she still was injured by Jordan’s dumping her. She had really liked Jordan, after all.
The grandfather clock chimed 9 o’clock. Everybody waited with their breath held. Then about five minutes later, the door opened, and in stepped Jordan. Mina immediately flipped the light switch, and the girls all yelled, rather angrily, “SURPRISE!” Jordan stopped dead, with an incredulous look on his face. Amy had to bite her tongue to stop herself from laughing. Then on a signal from the hidden Lita, the girls parted in the middle and Lita walked through to Jordan. “Happy Birthday Jordan.” She whispered softly.
Lita’s heart was pounding. Why was Jordan looking so strange? Was it because he didn’t like green? Lita had chosen her dress with special care, but if he didn’t like green… She watched him as he looked around with the strange expression still on his face. So maybe it’s not my dress… she thought hopefully.
Jordan looked around. His apartment had undergone a completely maniacal change! He caught sight of Amy. She looked rather amused. Then he caught sight of a banner. It read “Happy Birthday Jordan!”
Oh man… he felt as though he’d been hit by a club. Lita didn’t know that his birthday was in August. This was December! What was he going to do?!?!? Could he say it was his half-birthday? Not really, since August was only four months before December. But it was worth a try…
“Lita, thanks!” he croaked out. “ Wow, this is the best half-birthday I’ve ever had!” Instantly he knew that he should have lied and make it seem that it was his birthday. Amy looked frightened. Mina, Serena, Rini, and Raye looked murderous. And Lita looked as though she hadn’t heard. “Jordan, we baked a birthday cake for you!” Lita purred. “Come on and taste it!” She led him rather stiffly through the other girls that were standing stock still. Raye’s eyes were twitching, and Serena’s mouth was frozen in a mechanical smile. Mina and Rini looked as if they’d been force-fed poison. And Amy looked really frightened.
The moment the kitchen door had shut, Lita exploded. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN HALF-BIRTHDAY!!!”
Jordan recoiled back. “Actually, Lita, my birthday’s in August.” He murmured weakly. Lita looked as if she was about to cry. She knew that her friends were going to show no mercy. She was going to have to do all their homework for the entire month. She was going to have to take Rini to the park every day. She was going to have to make sandwiches for Amy whenever she wanted one. Amy! Lita’s stomach twisted. Amy had been forced to do this and it had turned out to be a fool’s errand! OH NO!!! Poor Amy! How was she going to be able to face her friends now. HOW WAS SHE GOING TO FACE THE BILLS!!!
Lita pushed the door open. Her friends were perched on the sofa. They weren’t looking at her. She looked at Amy, who was biting her lip, which had started to bleed by now. Lita sighed. “I’m sorry. Where do I start?”
All the girls pointed at the door, which had billions of little stars plastered all over it. Lita pulled herself over then started to peel them off. Then she heard the girls say softly, “Lita…” Lita turned around.
“SURPRISE!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!” Lita gasped. Of course… today is December 5th. My birthday!
Everybody was there. Raye’s grandpa, Mina’s team, and even the outer planet Sailor Scouts! Lita grinned. Then she caught sight of the banner. It now read “Happy Birthday Lita!”. She felt as if she’d been hit by a club. She laughed. And Raye smashed Lita’s face into the cake. Amy took a picture. And everybody laughed.
