Oppression/ Debra's Contest

How quickly and conveniently some of us Americans have forgotten that most of North America belonged to Mejico, as it was previously called. Right here on America's doorsteps, we have a neighboring country that is oppressed by its neighbor. We Americans travel overseas and offer our children for a cause that is yet to be determined successful. Our eagerness to liberate countries that seek to destroy us is unnatural and fruitless. But here in America, we have organized groups, such as the shameful Minute Men, men whose hatred of Mexicans have clouded their way of thinking and who will justify shooting indiscriminately at men, women and children who seek a better life, simply for crossing the borders. Our borders have always been open to Europeans but conveniently closed for our closest neighbors. We Americans forget that this country, one of the youngest in the world, was built by immigrants. The oldest infrastructures that line parts of our cities were built by foreign workers who came to this country looking for a better life. Mexicans are mistreated, bullied, and taken advantage of here in America, by Americans. We took their land, now we take their pride. Let’s have equality throughout America! Let’s treat everyone like we treat the Mexicans!

Hellooo! I am feeling oppressed here! Canada, Mexico, it makes no difference! It was all one land.. one FREE land.. inhabited by FREE people..
We say 'Native American's'.. they say 'Navajo', 'Blackfoot', 'Cherokee', 'Inuit',
'Aztec', 'Myan'...
I say this light heartedly... I just wanted to get into the debate about who the LAND belonged to. It belongs to no one, and everyone..
BUT Mexico did own a big portion of the SW United States, including the 'Country' of Texas! Look THAT one up :) But I do not deny the upper 'Yankee' states to be formerly British owned, as is Canada.. or was Canada.. I have to look THAT one up!

Roger, this is a good commentary and I agree with what you say. I am a little confused, however, with the last sentence. I'm assuming this was said in sarcasm?
One other point I must make as a Canadian. You state here that most of North America, at one time, belonged to Mexico. Please keep in mind that Canada is the largest country in the world (by land mass, not population). I would then say that it is most likely that most of North America was once owned by Canada, not Mexico.
I know this is not what your write is really about, but thought I would just give you a little geography lesson.
Good write though!

What is really upsetting to me is second and third generation Texans that came from Mexico putting down Mexicans.. I still don't get it? Are they trying to impress me because i appear white? I have so many different colors in me I should be spotted! As should most 'Americans'.
Did you know that Blacks were allowed in New York public restrooms before the Irish? How about Native Americans? I happen to be both. And Black Dutch from my father's mother and my mother's father.. strange coincidence. Black Dutch are Germans or Duetch that were conquered by the Spanish just the same as the Mexican Natives. and so on!!! We are all a little mixed, I'm afraid. If you are not, I'd like to know what makes you think so? Hmmm... I feel a contest coming on. Or even a contest entry? Ah Ha! En Guarde! lol.
Very touchy subject here, Roger. I was raised in neighborhood with mostly Hispanics. I seem to remain more comfortable with Hispanic neighbors even now. Such friendly and giving friends I have in some of my closest neighbors. And don't get me started on my 'rainbow' of grandchildren. God's own garden!

It's staggering how prejudiced we are as a country, despite our multicultural heritage and the civil rights movement. Once we are here, we shout to close the borders. And we also forget who we dispaced onto reservations, who were native to this great land and already here. How quickly we forget!
Good commentary.

Jim

We have a border patrol to keep Mexicans out and a grant program for other country's so they will start businesses here to compete with the people that give them the money. Your work does make one think......now bring your (ma chet te) over here and cut down my weeds. Does your wife make tamales? As David does and will say,.."En Garde" Good luck my friend, Anthony
