Country Boy's City Downfall
by David Pekrul
copyright 12-03-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

He was raised in the country, a town in the North,
With a small population, but then he came forth,
To the din of the city, the traffic and smog,
Congested like ant-hills and thick as a fog.

He rented a penthouse, a place with a view,
And was ready to party, (His 'City Debut').
He was now in the city and out for a spree,
When in a small nightclub he met sweet Marie.

She promised him pleasure, a place in the sun,
She promised him thrills and a whole lot of fun.
He fell for her charms and her little white lies,
As he looked at her beauty and gazed in her eyes.

She looked like an angel, (but one from below),
A devil at heart, she could give a great show,
While he was entranced by her figure and form,
He had no idea he'd entered a storm.

She pushed all his buttons, and then made him dance,
He did all her bidding as if in a trance,
A pawn in the making, a sucker for sure,
He fell for her bait and he swallowed her lure.

For drugs, prostitution and fraud were her ways,
They filled all her nights and consumed all her days,
But the country-boy saw only what he would see,
Like a man in the forest who can't see the trees.

Surprise overtook him when things turned out wrong,
And those from the streets said he didn't belong,
"Go back to the country and give up this scene,
Or you'll find more trouble than you've ever dreamed."

But he would not listen, for he was in love,
Marie was his life; his "Sweet Thing from above",
It wasn't until his arrest for some drugs,
The boy understood, she was not worth her hugs.

His time behind bars was a hard thing to bear,
He knew he'd been framed, and it just wasn't fair,
So now he is back in his Northern Hometown,
No more will he live like a fool and a clown.

I have lived in both the country and the city and as James said they both have their bad things. The Devil is not only in the city and temptation finds the tempted wherever they may be! Some of the biggest druggies(that I knew) were in the country, but they sold their goods to the ones that took them to the city. Still everyone should be careful, wherever they are! I enjoyed your story and hope the country boy finds him a good woman and settles down! Anthony

Cute, though the rhyme falters a little at 2 or 3 lines. This is a lighthearted piece that shouldn't be taken too seriously (in theme, though not in quality of the writing), however, being a city kid at heart, I can't help feel a bit of prejudice here. The city is really not all that bad and drugs are really everywhere.

Jim
