A Picnic Suprise
by Jordan Screws (Age: 21)
copyright 01-02-2006

Age Rating: 7 to 127

A peaceful afternoon unfolded before the students of Crossroads Junior High as the school let out for the day. The building disgorged its weary charges into the revitalizing sunshine, students hustling off to resume their lives outside school. Groups of students lingered to make plans for the night, for that night was Friday! No exception to this rule was the group of Usagi (Serena), Makoto (Lita), Ami (Amy), Naru (Molly), Umino (Melvin), and Jordan, the newcomer. The group was in a circle, debating plans for the night.

"I want to go to a movie!" shouted Usagi.

"An opera would be nice..." said Ami.

"Let's raid the Crown Arcade!" cried Makoto.

"I don't know... I want to do something different!" said Naru.

"I'm with Naru!" chimed Umino.

And thus the parties fell to a furious debate. In his mysterious way, Jordan gazed off in the distance, seemingly aloof from concerns of the world. Makoto noticed this and asked "Jordan, do you have a suggestion?" With this, the parties turned from each other to fix their gaze upon him. His face went a bit pale from the sudden question, but he recovered and said "...I indeed have an idea, but are you certain you want to hear it?"

"Go ahead Jordan!" said Makoto with a smile.

"Very well. I wish to go to a rave tonight... I like techno, and I used to frequent them back in America." said Jordan hesitantly, wearing a facial expression that seemed to indicate a fear of rejection.

"A rave? What's that?" asked a puzzled Usagi.

"It is a place where people play music called techno..." stated Ami in a precise manner. "However, it IS quite loud, so one must stay away from the speakers!"

"What else is there?" asked Makoto.

"... There's multi-colored lights, a packed dance floor, and strobe lights flickering on and off, giving the appearance things are in slow motion..." answered Jordan.

"Sounds like fun for the whole family... BUT how much is it to get in?" asked Naru.

"I heard it's about 10 yen a person..." chimed in Umino. "But there's also little pills going around called Ecstacy... I want nothing to do with them!"

"OK, scratch that..." said Jordan. So the group fell to debating once more, but nothing was accomplished. Usagi suggested everyone meet in the park a few hours later and pick up the debate there. This was agreed upon, and the group proceeded to their homes. Makoto and Jordan walked beside each other while talking about nothing in particular.

"Why are you so nervous around us? We won't bite your head off!" joked Makoto.

"I... don't feel entirely accepted for some reason. I feel that somehow I don't fit in despite my best efforts..." admitted Jordan nervously.

Makoto gently said "You've gotta have the courage to meet more people and be around them, Jordan! Ami was shy before we started hanging out, but now she's more sociable!" He looked at her and said "Very well. I shall try being more sociable..." She leaped in his arms and hugged him tightly as they reached her doorway. "See you later Jordan!" she happily chirped. "Certainly Makoto!" came his cheerful reply.

At his apartment, Jordan turned on some techno music and tried to find a sandwich. Finding little of interest to him, he decided not to eat, but drink some Sprite and listen to the thumping techno he liked so well. "I wonder what will happen at the park later? Will we reach a decision there or what?" His mind raced as he took a shower and found some clothing that matched his signature blue cloak. After looking over his attire of khaki cargo pants, a blue t-shirt and white tennis shoes, Jordan put on his cloak, and left for the park.

When he arrived he met with Usagi, Ami, Makoto, Rei, and Minako. "Hello sweetie! Still want to be my boyfriend?" greeted Minako in a cheerful tone. Makoto put Minako in a headlock and said gruffly "HE'S MINE..." Minako squealed "NOT THE HAIR! I'M SORRY!" With a confused look on his face, Jordan looked towards Usagi and Rei and noticed they had picnic baskets in their hands.

"What is the plan Usagi?" inquired Jordan.

"We all decided to have a picnic now... besides, there's nothing really good to do on Friday nights!" replied Rei.

With a look of bewilderment, Jordan stated "I was not informed of any modifications to the plan!"

"Blame that on Usagi. She can't plan five seconds beyond her face!" sniped Rei.

"I called him around 3:30!" cried Usagi in her own defense.

"I was in the shower around that time, as is my usual procedure..." he said in a matter-of-fact tone.

All the girls were blushing as Jordan realized the faux pas he made. "Yeah... moving on!" urged Makoto, who winked at him as the subject quickly changed to the picnic itself. Makoto and Ami placed the sheet gently on the ground as Rei and Usagi bickered over what foods would be served first. As preparations were being made, Jordan turned to Minako and asked "Who else plans to attend?"

Minako answered "We thought you would like to meet Darien and a couple other friends of ours. Umino and Naru are also coming..." "Thanks Minako..." replied Jordan as he climbed a tree and perched on the limb like a ninja, his cloak blowing about in the wind. "See you in a few minutes sweetie!" cried Minako. Jordan waved in reply and sat on a strong branch, then started to stare at the beautiful pond in the middle of the park.

"What a glorious day!" thought Jordan. He also enjoyed the prospect of being among girls and feeling accepted by them, and this thought brought a sly smile to his face. Mesmerized by the pond, he barely heard the words "LOOK OUT!" Turning around to see what the commotion was about, Jordan turned in time to be hit in the face by a brown object! "AHHHHHH!" he cried as he tumbled from the tree and landed on his back, the sky a colorful blur because the impact of the object had knocked off his glasses.

"Are you alright?!" a high-pitched voice cried our. "My head hurts... and I can barely see!" mumbled Jordan. He closed his eyes for a second and opened them to see a blur of facial features and hair colors swimming in front of him. When asked to speak, Jordan shouted "I am the God of Death once again!" as he slowly rose to his feet. "Yep... he's conscious because he's quoting Gundam Wing!" said a figure with brown hair.

"Deploy the Aries suits! Seach for my glasses!" he rambled in a daze as he looked for his eyeglasses, essential since he was near-sighted. A figure with blue hair put them on his face, and his vision improved immedately. "Thank you Ami..." Jordan said. Ami simply smiled and pointed to Makoto, adding "She found them at the base of the tree... and it's good she did! I never knew you were near-sighted." As Jordan's vision recovered, he saw three unfamiliar people.

The guy was wearing blue jeans, a grey t-shirt and black shoes and had black hair. One girl was wearing a short white coat and a teal dress and had marine blue hair. The third person he thought to be a girl was wearing green pants, a brown coat, and had short blonde hair.

"Who... are these people?!" came the question as Jordan shook off the daze resulting from the fall.

"The guy is Darien, the first girl is Michiru, and the second girl is Haruka." said Rei.

Haruka smiled and said "I was responsible for the football hitting you in the face. Sorry about that..."

"Nice to meet you Jordan..." said Darien. Michiru walked up and said "I'm Haruka's cousin. She's a tomboy, but I prefer the more peaceful things in life. It seems my warning reached you a bit too late..." she went on to say. He blushed and tried to find words, but he could say nothing. Makoto came to the rescue by suggesting that a pickup game be played. Everyone decided to play except Michiru, who acted as scorekeeper. Team Haruka was Haruka, Rei, Minako, and Usagi. Team Darien was Darien, Ami, Makoto, and Jordan.

"Leave the offense to Darien and me!" whispered Makoto to the team huddle. Haruka was less discreet, declaring "I can beat all of you!" Makoto turned to Ami and Jordan and said "You two come up with plans and run defense... we'll handle the running game!" The two academics, better suited to books than sports, agreed. Darien said "We can do this!"

Michiru produced a coin and flipped it, Haruka calling heads and Darien calling tails. "Heads it is!" proclaimed Michiru. And the ball went to Rei, who tossed it to Haruka. She dashed towards the end zone (two trash cans spaced apart) and made a touchdown, easily outpacing the slower Ami and Jordan. "This should be easy..." said Haruka to Rei with a smile. And the game seemed to be going her way for awhile, but then things came down to a tie. Darien snapped the ball to Makoto, she threw it to Jordan while he was rushing to their end zone, and he caught it. However, Haruka came from nowhere and tackled Jordan with her shoulder, a move which sent him flying to the ground and rolling along like a tumbleweed.

Haruka helped him up, brushed his shirt and cloak off, and slapped him on the shoulder, saying "Good Game!" "You were a worthy player yourself. Care to continue the game?" Jordan responded. "It's OK... we know who would have won!" she remarked with a sly grin. "Next time you won't catch me so easily..." was the reply. Everyone then proceeded to eat the picnic banquet prepared by Makoto and Ami.

"Hey Jordan! I heard that you liked techno and wanted to go to a rave!" stated Haruka.

"That is true... Know any good raves?" he asked eagerly.

"No, but I have some techno and a boombox I keep in my car!" she replied. "Care to hear it?"

"I would love to! Bring on the beats!" he said. Haruka went to her sports car, opened the trunk, and brought out a stack of CDs and a large boombox. "IT'S PARTY TIME!" Haruka declared with raised fists. When Haruka first played it, everyone looked at one another in utter confusion and wondered what exactly to do. Jordan started dancing to the blasting bass and heavy percussion mixed with electronic sounds. Rei covered her ears, but Makoto and Minako decided to join Jordan in dancing to the pounding beat.

After this icebreaking act, everyone decided to join in and dance to the techno. Makoto and Jordan paired off and danced beside each other, Minako danced to Jordan's other side, Darien danced with Usagi, and Umino and Naru arrived on the scene.

"What's that music?" asked Naru.

"Join us! It's techno!" shouted Ami.

"IT'S TIME TO BREAK IT DOWN!" Umino screeched as he ran to the dancing area, Naru trailing far behind. The loud music may have hampered vocal communication, but nothing could hide the fact that everyone had an enjoyable time at the impromptu gathering. The music kept going as the group of friends danced the afternoon away, only the arrival of nighttime stopping the festivities. While Umino and Naru walked home, the rest stayed behind to converse among themselves, making certain no one was around.

"Now it's time to make evil face the music!" declared Usagi, caught up in the moment.

"Your record just skipped..." shot back Rei.

"This argument is really cramping my groove..." remarked Minako.

"Let's work in sync!" cried Makoto.

"EVERYONE TRANSFORM!" ordered Usagi as she transformed into Sailor Moon. Everyone transformed into their crime-fighting form and prepared for another night of fighting evil. The band then set off for a routine patrol of the normally peaceful streets, but nothing was guaranteed in the life of a superhero group...
