The morning sun shakes the sleeping pond
A blackbird wings and spits
From his mouth
A cherry pit out in the blue
Splash!
The cherry pit spreads
A small and widening ripple
Across the pond
The farmer sees his life as such
As he kills and guts the fatted calf
Hooks and hangs it in the smoke house
The farmer sees his life
As the ripple in the pond
Except for the part that lies atop the table
Grace to God is said
An old man eats too much
A burning candle drips wax from a window sill
The cherry pit ripple seems gone
And yet has never left the pond
Two snarling dogs fight
Over the remains of
The dinner scraps
The remains of the calf remain
The candle has disappeared into the cold night
The smell lingers in the humid night
The black bird
Is winging to an unknown home---gone.
Dim red glowing embers
Turning cold in the fireplace
Bidding an old man farewell---gone.
Nothing is left over but...
An obituary,
Ashes,
Feathers,
A dollop of wax,
Bones,
And still calm waters
Leftovers prove the life...
All else---gone.
