I Went To War

  I Went To War

I went to war a cheery boy noble if you will,
Like Galahad allegiance sworn to give entire skill,
Immortal, "able 'ere I was", I was all that I could be,
Like Ulysses favored by the Gods to complete my odyssey.

Then I would return in glory, a hero to my peers,
To marching bands, and gun salutes, hurrahs and mighty cheers,
All this and more I fantasized as I went off to war,
To only clear horizons, Hell, I was young at twenty four.

Six months had passed and I remained sound of mind and limb,
But smoked some dope and gave up hope, this folly was a whim,
Born of human something that was damned and reeked throughout,
While bombs were raining fire that could never be put out.

Nightmares now began to take me screams began to fully wake me,
War is a stench that makes one retch, for in truth what glory be,
In body parts strewn across the land blown to bits and pieces?
I knew now that heroes were made of, blood, flesh, guts and feces.

I came home from that war a dreary man without two legs to stand on,
Worse were the visions depressing my soul, a thing forlorn, foregone,
One who for country dies in the mud is certain some diplomat's whore,
who pimps for guys like you and me, old at the age of twenty four.

So, so true. You put the reality in this poem that a lot of people don't stop to think about. In the military, we make a lot of sacrifices. And the results some of them can sometimes be seen as being worse than death (such as post traumatic stress disorder) by the time it's all over and we come back home. I have a friend who is deployed to Iraq. He is doing convoys right now. I prey for him quite often.

Wow, once again Rich you amaze me. This is a very powerful, gripping antedote of truth. I liked the metaphore you made with the wars ruining your life and drugs ruining your life. It's sad how something so powerfull wrong and immoral can grab a hold of our innoncence and leave us feeling empty even at a young age.

Very true, everything you said it's precisely right. Especially, all of it! You have a way of making nice, while stomping them in the ground. To be for but against, to choose because you have no choice, to totally confuse at first glance, and put the answers between the lines. Great write good job, thanks for making me think,

Gina
