I Cried The Wolf
by Richard Reed Jr
copyright 01-09-2006

Age Rating: 7 to 127

I cried the wolf---the wolf cried me!
We had come to know each other's language
As two soldiers who had stared down the barrels
Of each other's guns and decided friendship
Was better than death---
At least on that day

We had been devoured by an avalanche
Whose mercy left us in its wake
A snowy enclave to give us shelter
But not much else---especially no way out

For water we had more than met our needs
As for food three days rations lay with me
Old Wolfie my friend had not one tiny bite
But he kept me warm at night
And now he was my only friend

I shared my food with him "Why not?"
Thirty days or more we'd both be gone
But that was then and now was now---
Grace days as with bartered soul---now expired
Hunger had already chewed my inner walls away
And Wolfie looked a long time pale and famished

I had a gun--he didn't need one
Each of us our last meal could have taken
But it seemed down deep for moments
Like common language bubbled up
And neither of us desired to die alone

But in the end hunger swallowed the day
And starved the friendship
A blurry streak's reflection
Pounced on me
A cracking sound soft muffled
By the snow---aimed at him
I cried the wolf--the wolf cried me!

Mercy killing, double suicide, hunting for food, desperation, fear. Motivations are everything, it's what counts in the end. Not how, but why, All alone, I was with my prey, we both were gonna kill each other that day. Many days passed before we got a chance, and then they got suck in an avolance, first I said I then I said, they, all alone, with me and my prey. We became friends, for selfish reasons we made amends. Ah, yes, my motive all along was fear. And in the end fear is what I got. From then to now, from now to then, the motive was clear in the end. Died trapped in their prison of fear, I have a song I want you to hear. Great write, good job, thanks,

Gina

Very nice. A touching poem. Sad how it ended though. Very good work.

what is important is that you tried to survive for as long as possible before doing what was necessary. Anthony
