Oh Paint This Morning Black
by Richard Reed Jr
copyright 01-30-2007

Age Rating: 7 to 127

For my doggie "Pepper"

Kindly set her soul some slower pace of time--slack
To hold her final reckoning back
So I may whisper last goodbyes
With a tear-stained cloth next to my eyes.
For no one can bequeath me sweet compose
As none can tell her destined track.
And set me 'side the window pane
Where I can pray she wakes again.
Oh, paint this morning black---
Oh, paint this morning black!

Kindly set her food beneath that maple where she played
And dead-tired she would seek out rest and shade.
I take my evening walk without her now you know
And slowly zig-zag round pausing as I go.
Stopping here and stopping there
I feel the cost of pleasure dearly paid.
And lay me slowly on the ground
Where I can cry her homeward bound.
Oh, paint this morning grayed---
Oh, paint this morning grayed!

Kindly set the gate ajar with just a little crack
As from her deathly grave yet she could bound back
To health and full-fit days of yore.
Oh, Death admit her through that door
As though she is not dead but lost
And soon will scent again her track.
And set me drenched out in the rain
Where I'll feel nothing but my pain.
Oh, paint this morning black---
Oh, paint this morning black!

I like the way it reads, its like a song...the repetition of words and chorus of lines at the end of each stanza really drive it home

Such a sad poem... It's so depressing. Sometimes I feel like this too. It's so hard to lose something. I know this feeling so well... Anyway great poem! ^o^

Very sad and depressing. You will soon get past this.Even though i really cant say that.Be happy it is just a pet.Try loosing human life.It hurts so much more.I am a kid so choose to take my advise or not.

Loosing something close to you, such as a pet, is very depressing sometimes. But life moves on, thought the memories do not.

Loss is always hard to accept. We dismiss things we did without thought, but once a part is gone it never seems the same again. Good write, Anthony

How can you say you are a novice at writing poetry, when you write like this? You brought back memories of when I was a kid and lost a wonderful Border Collie that I had. Isn't it amazing how we get attached to our pets!
