They Walk That Country Lane
by David Pekrul
copyright 01-07-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Skipping down a country lane,
On just a normal day,
A little boy of eight years old,
Was happy as he played.

His puppy ran along beside,
(He'd follow anywhere),
And then around the second curve,
They met up with a bear.

The bear was startled and surprised,
And frozen in its tracks,
The little boy of eight years old,
Just stood there staring back.

And then it raised up straight and tall,
And gave an awful cry,
The little boy was terrified,
And knew that we would die.

He thought of Mom and Dad at home,
And how they would be hurt,
To lose the only son they had,
And lay him in the dirt.

He never even noticed that,
His dog had run ahead,
To rescue him from certain death,
And now it laid there dead.

The dog had scared the bear away,
And by its actions died,
The little boy of eight years old,
Just held his dog and cried.

Today he walks that country lane,
Although he's growing old,
But still that puppy walks with him,
Or so the story's told.

I have a dog that would die for my wife. It doesn't even like it when i hug her and I feed it! This story is a wonderful one and I get the feeling that you are the boy at heart! Anthony

Hard and chiseled story. Self-sacrifice of an animal is very significant and often overlooked. We have a bear problem in Sussex County N.J. So far, no loss of life, but severe property damage and these bears are a constant threat. The message here is clear and a very important one. Lucky for the boy!
