Visions of Darkness
by Richard Reed Jr
copyright 02-16-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Where no light naturally shines,
The searing flames of his
Napalm-like breath
Turns everything arid and ashen.
His whole world's a blazing pyre.

He speaks rarely
But, when he does
It's with a mocking inflection
In his voice.
Sometimes he utters surly grunts,
Unusually threatening,
Even sinister-sounding.
To hear his scream
In your heart
Is to go mad forever!

The Dark One is haughty and
Filled with sinful pride.
He fills the air with hateful
Glares and snide remarks.
He eternally feels no pain,
No remorse---Nothing!

Outside of his fiery pyre
Nothing exists
Except dark lonely corners,
Where his twining plant-like mind
Forever creeps and seeks weak souls,
For an attachment they will never break.

When he's still,
The only objects visible
Are his blue-hot eyes
Of raging hot coals.
The "Dark One" waits there
At the end of the Primrose Path
Waiting to meet all who unwisely
Stray down his path,
Waiting and pretending to be their
True friend while he fills them with
Emptiness, loneliness and heartache
Beyond compare.

You must give him his due, he is clever
As eternity is long, and
Evil as space is infinite.
He's like a poisonous snake
Ready to strike
The moment we turn our backs.

Though a beast he his,
He doesn't conquer through physical powers.
He's devious, deceitful,
Forked-tongued, and two-faced.
These are his weapons of destruction.

He might pose as
Your best friend and benefactor.
Watch your back!

He might crawl into
The heads of your loved ones.
Watch your heart!

He tricks you into a moth
Blind to the fire.
As you perish circling madly
circle by circle until
You no longer exist,
You are now metamorphosed
Into a serpent
Who will do his bidding
At any trumpet's call
Because he has captured your soul.

When he loses a soul
His face grows distorted, elongated.
His eyes narrow and his hands
Tremble with anger.
He becomes consumed
With an absolute loathing.

In spite of the black and horrible
Picture painted of the Dark One
And the premonitions of disaster,
His power is to cover you in fear,
And enshroud you
By the enfeebling darkness.

If you say with all your
mental force and concentration
---"Be gone!"
He will be gone.
For he is composed of mere illusion.
Fearsome though he may look,
Don't be deceived by the
Flickering light of his fire.
He is as the nightly ghost
Who flees with the morning sun.
All you need to do
With the Dark One
Is to pluck him out of your soul,
As you would pluck
A weed from the grass.

Without your fear he is powerless.
Come out of the darkness!
The sunlight lies
Just beyond your panic.
Be prepared for his sleight of hand,
And you will always
Have the advantage.
He is a grotesque shadow of evil.
Your light of understanding
exposes him for the magician
He actually is.
The Dark One will pay you
frequent visits.
Keep him behind you!

Where no light naturally shines,
The searing flames of his
Napalm-like breath
Turns everything arid and ashen.
His whole world's a blazing pyre.

Ahh, another rendition of the darkness and fire that blazes in Hell. And you can change the title back to "Visions Of Hell." Hell is a place if you used more extreme curses (you know which one) then yes, 16+ would be a better age rating, but this is fine. The flow and choice of words in this poem is wonderful and have I had a few nice visions recently. Only a best friend dying, but I'm talking about a poem now. I'm not Christian but I do make references to hell in many of my poems. I also like how you only say "Dark One" and not "The Devil" or "Satin." For it bothers me slightly when poems are stuck to the vault of one religion and make it faulty for others that aren't part of the author's religion. Oh, and punctuation isn't necessary in some of the lines. Keep up the good work.

The darkness is rising...farewell...

I agree with Brian on punctuations. Also in the 7th
stanza it reads: "Though a beast he his" could you have meant { he is ? ) I wish more soul's could see what it is you see about the truth maybe the world would be a better place if so . . . maybe THANKS DAN P.

The Devil, continuously prowling for that eager soul to drown in sinfulness. But is it only the beast doing, only brought about by this Dark One. I beg you see that this devil in nothing more than a contributor to evil and that we are all we able to conjure up the use of this evil ourselves, stabbing people in the back. It is when this Evil and Devil work together that truly horrible things happen. Good thought provoking write.
