He sits on the sidelines and watches the race,
Participants running and keeping the pace,
While showing such stamina, posture and grace,
To run is to always be free.
He ran in the marathons back in his day,
When he was a young lad, before he was gray,
Now often he wishes he still ran today,
A runner he always will be.
He felt such an energy under his feet,
And there were not many that he couldn't beat,
The thrill of the winning was always so sweet,
His wins were a sure guarantee.
The roar of the crowd and the beat of his heart,
The pop of the pistol to signal the start,
He shot down the runway as straight as a dart,
The finish was all he could see.
But now he is old and he no longer runs,
That's up to his children, his daughter and son,
By watching them race, he will know he has won,
His future is what they will be.
