Reader's Theatre: Fun Play About the "Nyms" (rhyming too!)
by Lisa Anderson (Age: 18)
copyright 01-23-2006

Age Rating: 1 to 127

1. I’m a “Nym,” the synonym, and my friendly twin, the antonym is oh so different than me. We bicker and bicker, back and forth, but we never seem to agree.

2. I’m a “Nym,” the antonym, and I’m the opposite of synonym.

3. I’m a “Nym," the homonym, and I’m nothing like those two! My words are both the same and different like the color blue and blew! (Everyone acts like they're blowing out candles)

2. Our Mother English has raised us well. Or as synonym would say, she’s raised us “swell.” We each have a job, they’re all exciting, and they’re all important in the world of writing!

1. If you want to write better, learn about us. Listen to everything we have to discuss.

3. I refuse to buy books when they aren't written by... (1 interrupts)

1. I don’t know if I want to laugh…

2. Or cry!

3. As I was saying... I only buy books written by Ty.

1. The Beanie Babies?

3. No Pennington.

1. Good and excellent, they’re synonyms.

2. Good and bad, they’re antonyms.

3. Pear and pair, they’re homonyms.

1. Like the fruit and the underwear?

3. Yes, exactly!

2. Fruit of the Loom!

1. Did you hear the one about the tortoise and the hare?

2. Of course, one was fast and one was slow.

3. Yeah, hair and hare!

2. Wait, my hair is fast?

3. No, it’s a homonym. The hare is fast.

1. So…my hair is slow then?

3. Let me explain, hair and hare sound the same, but one is this (hold hair) and one is this (show hare). They’re spelled differently too!

2. Different, that’s where I come into play, good, bad, happy, and sad! Hypocrites love me.

1. Love and admire. That’s like me! Wish and hope, freedom and free!

2. I hate you. Wait; are we still talking about Fruit of the Loom?

All. No!

1. Synonyms are words that mean the same thing like beautiful and gorgeous.

2. Antonyms are opposites like rainy and sunny.

1. I love Sonny and Cher!

All. “I’ve got you babe.”

3. Any homonyms are words that are pronounced the same, but have different meanings and spellings like their, there, and they’re!

2. Ah, they’re everywhere!

3. What?

2. The hares!

1. Are we still on hair?

All. Turn towards 1 and stare.

2. So thanks for listening, hope you had fun.

3. As for us, I know we had a ton!

1. We really hope that we haven’t been dim.

3. As we taught you more about we three Nyms!

1. So now we’re finished, and now we’re through. (1 and 3 pretend to leave.)

2. But wait, we’re not quite done with you!

All. Ah, yes.

3. Au revoir.

1. Auf wiedersehen

2. And adieu!
