Oops, Didn‘t Mean To!
by Lisa Anderson (Age: 18)
copyright 01-23-2006

Age Rating: 4 to 127

Elizabeth Rose took the hand of her new friend Carrie as they climbed the steep steps up to Lizzie’s bedroom. Lizzie held up her short, pink dress so she wouldn’t step on it as her skinny legs struggled to go up the never ending stairs. Out of breath, Lizzie took a deep sigh of relief as she stretched out her arm to reach the cold, golden door knob. As she turned the knob, she led the way into her brightly colored sanctuary. Lizzie strode around her bedroom as she introduced Carrie to her “babies”.

“This is Party Girl. She’s my second favorite. I like Michelle better though. Which do you want to play with?” questioned Lizzie. Carrie pondered her choices as Lizzie examined her wide array of stuffed animals and baby dolls. Fatigued, she sat on her striped Pocahontas bed spread. Even when she was tired, Lizzie was always restless, so she began clicking the heels of her black and white saddle shoes being that her feet didn’t reach the floor. The bright light of the sun streamed through the pane of her windows and sparkled onto her Rapunzel length, white-blonde hair.

Uhh I can’t pick. I like my dolls better. Can we play tea party?” Carrie asked.

“Hmmph. Well, I just ‘gotted’ a new tea set from Gram, but Mommy says it’s very special and I have to be real careful with it,” informed Lizzie. Though she was quite apprehensive, Lizzie felt that since Carrie was the guest, she would have the privilege of deciding the afternoon’s events. She proceeded to open up her white toy chest. On the front was the inscription ‘Elizabeth Rose’ painted in red, elegant cursive. She blew her medium length bangs out of her whispering, gray eyes as she used all of her might to pry out the cardboard box containing her new, fragile, porcelain tea set. Very carefully, she set the box down on her bed as she opened up the brown, cardboard flaps. Inside, was a gorgeous, white tea set with delicate blue flowers painted on each cup and saucer. Lizzie studied her prized possession not wanting to touch it for fear of wrecking it’s beauty by smudging it with her oily fingers.

“C’mon, let’s go play restaurant, we don’t want to play tea party anyways,” pressured Lizzie.

“No, I wanna play this!” Commanded Carrie as she gazed at it with pure joy and admiration. Feeling the pressure, Lizzie’s mind raced with possible excuses to give for not playing with her polished tea set. She became very tense and stressed. Her heart started to beat quickly as Carrie peered in the box.

“Well, I’m gonna take it over to the table,” Carrie informed. Lizzie didn’t want to hurt her friend’s feelings, but she knew that if something were to happen to her new tea set from Gram, Mommy would be angry, and she would be devastated.

“No, I said no, Carrie!” shouted Lizzie. Without hesitation, Carrie picked up the tea set and ran to the table. She climbed on top of Lizzie’s red, Playschool chair to her matching table. Reaching her hands high above her head, Carrie dropped the cardboard box to the ground containing Lizzie’s tea set.

“Bang!” Already in tears, Lizzie crept up to the box and examined the shattered pieces of her once beautiful, brand new, porcelain tea set.

“Oops, sorry Lizzie! How’d that happen? I didn‘t mean to,” snickered Carrie with a satisfied glare. “Well, I think Mommy wants me to come home now. See you,” said Carrie as she skipped gleefully out of Lizzie’s room.
