Moving on
by Brian Dickenson (Age: 73)
copyright 01-29-2006

Age Rating: 13 to 127

When I was young
And somewhat sprightly,
My footsteps touched
The earth so lightly.

But as the years did
Fly along
My footsteps slowed,
As did my song.

On and on the time
Did fly
And then;
As if in the blink of an eye

My footsteps faltered,
My song was sung,
The mirror showed me
I was old; not young.

The harder breathing,
The aching chest;
My eyes grew dim;
I’m laid to rest.

You know, I've heard that we take life much too seriously. After all, we never get out of it alive anyway. LOL. Though sad, this poem is true. And what matters is not whether we were born or die but if we lived inbetween. Only then does life make any sense. :-) As always, your beat is on, your rhymes unforced, and I can never find a flaw when you write. Thank you, as always, for sharing your talent with us all.

Well Brian...I would feel sorry for your hero here except that I am absolutely, positively sure that there was an awful lot of living going on between the newborn crying and the old man dying. The poem sums up very succinctly the time line of life and does it with a no-nonsense, this is the way it is and that's that approach. You have a way of getting to the kernal of a subject and laying it bare without apology...don't ever change! Oh yeah, the poem is well written, too.

I like the way the poem moves along in measured beats or meter like the subject of the person movinf on in age and time. Kind of sad, though with a sense of gentle resignation and acceptance.

God, it's awfully hard to answer a dead man!

You know I can relate to this after reading my poetry. Let's commiserate!

Technically flawless as usual, good rhythm.

Keep them coming,

Rich

Brian, your poem reminds me of my life right now. Even though I'm growing old physically, my mind is much more active now than when it was in my younger years and I'm going to continue living with joy and happiness, doing things to feed my inner soul; small pleasures such as reading good poetry and writing to please myself.

I hope and pray my friend that you are not close to being laid to rest. Only the good die young,so you will be really old when you do finally go! (I hope, I hope!)LOL Your write is very good and I enjoyed the read very much. I don't have as much time as I did before, but I try to come as often as I can and visit all my friends here at P-N-P. Of which you are one of my favorites, Anthony

This sure strikes a chord. I'm only 55 years old, but how the time has flown. Now I am retired and the days are going by faster than ever. I sometimes feel the aches and pains, but I intend to make the most of the years I have left.
Travel is one thing that is in my blood (I guess this is due to my 32 year career in travel) and I intend to see much of this big planet before I go.
Very good write, Brian, always clean and crisp, with good rhythm and rhyme.

This truly hurts to read, for I cannot escape the reality of life and the march of time, that cannot seem to slow down. Your sentences and rhymes are effortless and clean. Devastating imagery and a wonderful fluidity. Time forgives no one and to have to read about it in such a fantastic manner is pretty sobering. Great job, Brian. I appreciate great poetry!
