A Summer in Britain
Chapter 9
by Haley R. (Age: 15)
copyright 02-11-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I turned around once more to see that Gina was closer than I thought. She was actually just a few paces behind the car, and then I took one last look at Zack.
I worriedly looked over my shoulder, then I finally came up with a decision, “Ok, but we better get a move on.”
With that said and done Kyle swung open the door to the back seat.
“Hurry! She’s behind the car!” I heard Larry say. I hurriedly launched myself into the car with all of my might. Kyle and Larry caught my arms and started to slowly reel me in. But then I felt something tug on my ankle. I turned around and there was Gina, trying to tug me back.
“What the heck are you doing?!” she yelled, “Get out of that car now!”
Her nails started to slowly dig into my leg and I winced in pain. She needed to cut her nails.
Larry continued to pull my arms along with Kyle. As the pulling went back and forth I started to feel like a human tug of war rope, and believe me, that isn’t a very good feeling. Suddenly, I heard Larry shout something out to Zack that sounded like, “Start driving!”
“What?!” Zack yelled.
“Just do it!” Larry yelled back.
Kyle turned to face Larry, though he was still tugging my arm, “Have you gone mad!?”
“Just do it!” he repeated to Zack, completely ignoring Kyle’s comment. Zack turned around and looked at me as if to hear an objection from me, but I remained silent. Hesitantly, he put the car in gear.
“Hold on,” he said more to himself than to me. I suddenly felt the car lurch, and slowly move forward. I closed my eyes tightly, as I felt the wind hit against my shins sticking out of the open door. I felt Gina’s grip on my ankle tighten, and the pain increase. Obviously she was running with the car. I let out a small helpless yelp.

“This is such a stupid plan Larry! What were you thinking!?” I heard Zack yell. I opened one eye and looked at Larry’s reaction, but he wasn’t exactly reacting the way I thought he would. Larry completely ignored Zack’s scolding, and started to observe things. He looked at me, then Gina (who was yelling at me), then at the road.
“Go faster,” Larry said in a calm voice. Kyle seemed to be completely confused by what Larry was saying, but after a few minutes of thinking he smiled and nodded.
“Go faster, Zack,” he said in the same tone as Larry. Zack looked at them both as if they had just told him the earth had exploded, but obeyed. I closed my eyes again and felt the wind rush at my shins faster. I felt Gina’s grip tighten, but I attempted to ignore the pain. I opened my eyes, and turned my head so I was looking Gina dead in the eye.
“Get out of this car now!!” she yelled, “I’m going to be late to my hair appointment because of you!” Her grip got tighter around my leg. I felt like I had completely lost circulation in my foot. I looked up at Kyle and Larry for help, but they simply smiled and nodded. I nodded back, pretending to understand, but then started to think up my own plan inside my head. Finally I gave up. I had no idea what to do.
“Get out of the car you little brat!” I heard her yell. Finally I had had it. I can’t take it anymore. This lady is going to drive me nuts!!

I closed my eyes once again and started to jerk my leg she was holding on back and forth, attempting to kick her in the face. I’ve had enough of this lady! Up and down, back and forth, I jerked my leg. The mindless flailing of my leg started to cause Gina to loosen her grip, but she still wouldn’t let go. I started to move my leg faster and faster.
“Hey! What are you doing?! Stop it! It’s annoying!! Wait until your father here’s about this! You’re always doing something wrong! Why did you even bother to come here?! It isn’t like anyone...,” she took a large gasp. But I wouldn’t blame her for doing so, who wouldn’t be tired after running along side a car that was going at least seventy miles-per-hour? Finally she decided to finish her sentence, “...Cares about you.” Her last sentence was replayed in my head over and over again, like it was a broken record. “It isn’t like anyone cares about you. It’s isn’t like anyone cares about you. It isn’t like anyone cares about you,” I could picture Gina’s mean face repeat constantly those seven words in her nasty little voice. I’d had enough. I couldn’t take it anymore! I let out a loud, annoyed, (unnecessary,) scream, then kicked her right in the side of the face, giving her a bloody nose. She then with that let go immediately and stumbled onto the ground. With one last pull Larry and Kyle manage to get me into the back seat. Then Larry reached over me and slammed the car door shut as we continued down the road. Gina got up again and started to run after the car, but couldn’t catch up. I rolled down the window and started making obnoxious faces at her.
“What are you doing?” Kyle sighed. I simply smiled at him, and went back to happily taunting Gina. My comments were obnoxious and sarcastic, which, as it seemed, annoyed Gina the most.
“Oh, is something wrong Gina? ...No? ... I didn’t think there was.”
“Don’t worry we’re only going to do this until we reach Beijing!”
“Oh, you can’t possibly be tired. We’ve still got twelve blocks to go.”
“Your running as fast as you can? Really? I thought you were walking.”
“Hm... I think we should go faster.”
“Hey, how does it feel to know that you can’t catch me?”
“I know you love me, and all, but, really, chasing after my car is a little much.”
I yelled more and more comments out at her as the car went down the road. And to tell you the truth, I found them most satisfying. I never knew revenge could be so sweet.

I could see expression getting more and more angry as she sprinted after the car. Gina ran after us for about another block, then stopped and folded her arms. I couldn’t see her face, but I could tell she was pouting.
“Hey, YOU MADE ME BREAK A NAIL!!!!!!!!” I heard her yell after the car. She then let out a frustrated scream and stomped her foot on the paved sidewalk.
“Hey, wait, slow down a second,” I told Zack. Zack slowed down the car, and I poked my head out the window and started to shake my fist a Gina.
“What? It isn’t like anyone cares about you, you spoiled brat!!” I shouted at her, trying my best to sound the way she said those words to me before. I could see Gina’s face starting to scrunch up with anger, but I rolled up my window before I could hear her reaction. Then Zack started to take off down the road as fast as the speed limit would let him, and I watched Gina slowly disappear in the distance.

Once we had turned the corner Larry started to crack up.
“I (ha!) can’t believe (ha!) you said that to her!!” he said slapping his thigh. Zack then started to join in the laughter. Soon after the two started to laugh uncontrollably I started to laugh as well. Once we got Kyle to laugh the car seemed to be filled with happiness, but after a few minutes of driving the laughter died, and a deafening silence hushed over the car.
I decided to end the silence, “Yeah, that lady was my dad’s-”
“Girlfriend,” Kyle, Zack, and Larry said at once. I looked at them surprised. How did they know?
Zack seemed to have noticed my confusion, “You don’t know. Do you?”
“You’re father is the richest man in town,” Kyle said as if he had known this forever.
Larry happily sat up and faced me, “And everyone knows him...,” Larry paused and turned his attention to the window, “And his girlfriends.”
“GIRLFRIENDS?!” I said surprised. Did he say “girlfriends”?!; as in plural; with an “s”? No, no, no, no. My dad couldn’t have multiple girlfriends to save his life!
“Are we talking about the same guy?” I laughed.
“The guy who has a big house with a pond, and a limo, and a big yard, and a butler?” Larry asked taking his attention away from the window. I nodded.
“Then we’re talking about the guy!” all three of the guys chorused at once.
“He doesn’t have several girlfriends at once, does he?” I asked cautiously. My serious dad with multiple girlfriends is kind of a scary thought. All of the guys laughed at once.
“No!” they shouted at the same time. I was relieved.
I smiled, “Do you guys practice saying things at the same time, or something?” Everyone started to laugh, but as always, the laughter died once more.

Several minutes of silence passed. Finally, someone chose to speak.
“May, what happened to your ankle?” Larry asked innocently.
“What?” I asked dazed. I really wasn’t paying much attention.
“Your leg; what happened to it?” Larry started to point at my ankle. I looked down and saw where Gina had been holding onto my leg with her razor sharp nails, there was blood oozing from cuts.
“Oh god, what are we going to do?! What are we going to do?! Somebody call an ambulance!” Larry started to panic.
Kyle looked up then looked at my ankle, “Larry, we don’t need an ambulance. We just need a few bandages.”
“Are you kidding?! Look at the size of that!” Larry yelped.
“Larry, it’s just a few cuts,” Kyle said calmly.
“I think I’m going to be sick,” Larry wailed as he rolled down his window and leaned his head out of it. Then I noticed Larry was obviously scared of blood. Who would’ve thought?
“Zack, May’s got a scrape and Larry’s turning green,” Kyle called to Zack calmly. Obviously this happens regularly.
“Alright,” Zack said as he slowly pulled over the car.
Zack got out of the car and helped Larry out of the car.
“I’m going to take Larry into the bathroom,” Zack said as he offered Larry a shoulder to steady himself with, “Can you help May with her ankle?” Kyle nodded, and Zack disappeared with Larry into the building we parked next to.

Kyle quickly got out a first aid kit from under the seat.
“Can you put your leg up for a second?” Kyle asked as he quickly searched through the first aid kit. I did as I was told. Kyle then took out a long bandage and a liquid in a bottle. Then he quickly went to work. He applied a liquid to my wound from the bottle. The strange liquid made my leg feel a burning sensation going up and down my leg, causing me to wince.
“The burning will go away. Just hold still,” Kyle said in his usual calm, quiet voice as he quickly and quietly wrapped the bandage around my ankle. Once I was sure he was done I put down my leg.
“Wow. You’re pretty good at doing that,” I said amazed with his speed.
He looked up at me and smiled, “Thanks. I want to be a doctor when I finish college.”
“Really?” I asked with even more amazement. I wouldn’t expect a rock fan to want to be a doctor.
“Yeah, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to do it,” Kyle said starting to look down at his worn sneakers.
“Why not? I think you’d make an awesome doctor,” I said. And I meant it.
“Oh?” he looked up at the ceiling of the car, “Well, Medical school is expensive, and my family can’t exactly afford it right now, and I really don’t want to burden my Grandma. Every since...”
Kyle’s fast mumbling slowly trailed off as he looked through the window behind me then turned away pretending he’d never said anything. I looked out the window and saw Larry and Zack coming back. Larry sat in the back seat with Kyle and I and Zack got into the car, and we drove off in silence.

This time, Zack decided to end the silence, “So May,” he said still watching the road, “Why don’t you ever have a car? You look old enough.”
“I, um...” I paused. This is it; the time when I get kicked to the curb and they all say that I’m too young to be hanging out with them. I looked at the floor, but I could feel them all gazing at me curiously, “Um...I don’t...,” I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to say it NOW, “Alright! Idon’thavealicense!!!”
“What?” Kyle said. Obviously I had said it too fast.
“I. Do. Not. Have. A. Drivers. License,” I said slowly.
Larry stared at me, “How old are you?” Here it comes; I’m going to get kicked out of the car! I need to stall.
Thinking of the lamest comeback I simply said, “How old are YOU?”
Larry chuckled, “Eighteen. I’m going into my first year of college. All of us are. Now, how old are YOU?”
“I’m...,” I knew I could lie about my age, but I’d feel guilty later. I might as well tell the truth. I gulped, “Sixteen.”
“And,” Zack started to say with a suspicious look, “Don’t you get your license in the United States at sixteen?”
I gulped, and slightly nodded, “I didn’t pass my drivers test.”
Zack’s expression faded, but the suspicious tone in his voice remained, “Now, there’s something we’ve got to do about that, isn’t there?” I held my breath. Right away I could tell what was about to happen wasn’t good. Zack slowly parked the car on the side of the rode and scooted into the passenger’s seat.
“Well...” he started to say.
“Well...?” I asked. What was he planning on doing to me?!
“Well, aren’t you going to get into the front seat?” Zack raised an eyebrow
“What?!”
Zack grinned, “I’m going to give you driving lessons!” My mouth gaped. That was the LAST thing I thought he was going to say!
“So, are you getting in or not?” his grin widened, “I’ll be happy to drive the whole way home.”
“Um...” I looked at Larry and Kyle who were both stunned by Zack’s offer. Obviously this doesn’t happen often, “I...uh...,” I looked at Larry and Kyle once more. Larry was mouthing “Do it! Do it! Do it!!” while Kyle sat patiently waiting for my answer, though I could tell he was anxious, “Um...I guess it won’t hurt.”

Larry jumped out of his seat in joy, causing him to hit his head on the ceiling of the car.
“Ouch...” he grumbled as Kyle slowly helped him to sit down again.
“Alright then,” Zack sat patting on the driver’s seat, “C’mon and take a seat.” I quickly crawled over the seat and plopped myself down in the driver’s seat. The seat was big, and my feet could barely touch the gas and brake pedals. The leather seat was warm, from being sat in before, and it was as soft as a cloud. I was starting to love being in the driver’s seat already. I examined the rearview mirror, and quickly moved it so it was more suitable for my height, then I slowly started to move the seat forward so my feet were comfortable. I carefully eased myself into the seat letting the smell of leather consume me. It was so peaceful, warm, and relaxing. I sighed with pleasure. Then I looked over at Zack who was patiently waiting for me to start up the car.
“Ready?” he asked me. Before I could answer Kyle jumped up.
“Are you sure this is legal?” he asked cautiously, “All she has is an American driver’s permit. Would that work?”
Larry’s head popped up, “Well, there’s only one way to find out, right?” I gulped. Suddenly the butterfly’s started to form in my stomach. It happens every time. I feel fine sitting down, but when it’s time to drive I go into panic mode. And that’s exactly why I failed my driver’s test.

“Alright, May, you ready?” he asked as if it was my first time trying to walk. Usually I would’ve cracked a joke or yelled, “You betcha!!” but the fear of crashing stopped me from doing so. I shook my head and sunk lower into the seat.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Larry asked. My muscles started to tighten up and my leg started to shake. I grew pale; VERY pale.
“Are you ok?” Kyle said leaning forward. I shook my head again.
“May, breathe in,” Larry said. I took a long shaky breath and held it in. I closed my eyes and slowly breathed out.
Zack put his hand on my shoulder, “Better now?” I took another deep breath and nodded.
“Good,” Kyle, Larry, and Zack said at the same time, causing me to laugh.
Zack gave my shoulder where his hand lay a gentle squeeze, “You sure you can do it?” Unlike his usual outbursts he said it quietly and gently. I nodded.
“Good!” he said taking his hand off of my shoulder. He gave me a playful slap on the back, nearly knocking the wind out of me, “So relax and have a great time!!”

I smiled then slowly put the car into gear. I was about to push down on the gas petal when I felt a slight tap on the shoulder.
“Forgetting something?” I heard Larry say.
“I already put on my seatbelt,” I said as I pushed the button to make the top of the convertible go down.
“No,” Kyle said, “Your permit.”
“Right, got it,” I quickly retrieved my permit from my back pocket and put it on the dashboard. With that done I put the car in gear and slowly back the car out of the space. Next thing you knew I was speeding down an empty street to places I’d never known existed.

“Alright May, your doing good,” Zack said, “Now take a left.”
I made a sharp turn causing everyone to get jerked to the left.
“May, you might want to slow down,” Kyle said trying to shout over the loud music blasting from the radio, “The speed limit’s 70!”
“No, speed up! You’re hardly going fast at all!” Larry yelled from the back seat.
“No, really, it’s going too fast,” Kyle suggested.
“Faster! Faster! Faster!” Larry started to chant.
As the two of them argued in the backseat my arms started to tense up. I was so confused. Should I speed up or slow down? How fast am I going, anyway; too fast? What’s the speed limit? Why do they make speed limits, anyway? Why do they drive on the opposite side of the street? Why is the driver’s seat on the opposite side?
The many question going on in my head started to get me confused
“It isn’t like you’d be able to do better when you were sixteen!” Larry said to Kyle in a matter-of-fact tone.
“That was a long time ago,” Kyle said back to him, “Why do you have to keep bringing that up?”
“Because this conversation reminded me,” Larry said in the same tone as before, “Once you think about it, you aren’t all too different from May.” I listened to there conversation in awe. Wow, how is Kyle like ME? I’m loud and obnoxious, he’s quiet and reserved. He’s into reading, the only things I read are comic books, (though I’ve found a liking for romances lately, but that’s my own dirty little secret ...).
I slightly turned around so I could here there conversation.

“Please, Larry, don’t. I really want to avoid my past,” Kyle said in a quiet voice.
Larry ignored Kyle comment and started to list things, “Well, for starters, you both failed your driver’s tests the first time,” Wow! That was a shock. Kyle; failing something? I couldn’t ever picture that...
“Second,” Larry continued, “You both-”
“May, watch the road!!” I heard coming from the seat beside me. Larry immediately stopped talking. I whipped my head around, and I noticed the car had drifted off to the other side of the road and a large truck was heading straight this way! I, having no idea what to do, let out a scream or terror and covered my face with my hands, causing myself to let go of the steering wheel. I was terrified. Not only of what could happen with a head on collision like this, but what Zack, Larry, and Kyle would think of me; especially Zack. What would he think of me after completely destroying his car? I waited for the sound of crushing metal and screaming, but none came. Suddenly the car lurched sideways causing me to fly into Zack. I opened my eyes and found that he was completely leaning over me with both hands on the steering wheel. Then I looked down the street, and the truck was nowhere to be found, and I looked behind us, and I saw the truck going peacefully down the road. Zack had saved us all.

I placed both hands safely on the steering wheel and Zack let go.
“Be more careful next time,” he said with a half smile. I don’t get how he could smile at a time like this. If He had nearly killed us all and nearly destroyed my car, I’d be annoyed out of my brains. But somehow, his smile reassured me. It proved to me that he really wasn’t worried, and really didn’t care. Call me crazy, but I really don’t think he would’ve minded if I really DID crash his car. Of course, I’m not saying that I should...

“What the bloody Hell was that?!” I heard Larry yell from the back seat. I turned around and found Larry with his legs where his head should be and his head up against the seat in front of him. His arms were flailing around trying to get a grip on something so he could pull himself up. Kyle however, though he was a little shocked with what had just happened, seemed to not be hurt at all. In fact, he was sitting peacefully upright in his seat.
“I told you to put on your seatbelt,” Kyle shook his head as if to be saying; “You’re such a nutcase.”
I slowly and carefully pulled over the car, as if to pretend nothing had happened, though, the tone in my voice revealed the terror in my voice, “Is everybody ok?!” My head whipped around to make sure everyone wasn’t hurt in the back.
“What do you think?!” I heard Larry shout from the backseat. Larry was sitting upright now, but he still must have been really annoyed.
“Larry, really, it isn’t her fault,” Kyle said in his usual calm voice, “You were the one that didn’t follow safety regulations.”
“Why do you always blame things on me?!” Larry asked even more annoyed than before.
“I don’t blame things on you; I tell the truth,” Kyle said. I could feel anger rise in his voice.
“And the ‘truth,’ just always happens to end in me doing something wrong?!” Larry raged.
“Hey, I never said that!” Kyle shouted. The once calm and quiet Kyle had vanished. But then again, who WOULDN’T be mad if someone was talking that much trash.
“Well, it’s completely obvious you thinking it!” Larry yelled. I thought this was strange though, this seemed nothing like the Larry I knew, but then again, nothing’s been the same today.
Kyle looked frustrated, “What are you talking about?! I’ve said nothing like tha-”
“Larry, can you try to be more careful, you need to stop shaking the boat. We’re all going to fall! Larry, slow down, you’re going too fast! Use common sense, Larry. Stop it, Larry! Why won’t you just...”
I couldn’t listen to the rest. I couldn’t take it anymore. I caused this...I made everyone so unhappy. What was I thinking?
The bickering continued as I slowly sank into a grief expression. I did all of this. It was my fault.
“May?” I heard a voice say. I looked up, and Zack was looking at me extremely worried. I must have looked pretty pitiful while I was thinking. I could tell by looking at Zack’s face.
I was about to answer, but Zack’s attention had left me.
“Larry, did you take your pills today?” Zack called back to Larry and Kyle, who were at each other’s throats. Larry’s expression then changed from “Leave me alone, or else you die” to, “Oh my god, I’m SO sorry.”
“I’m SO sorry! I forgot last night,” Larry said close to weeping, “I’ll get of the car and walk.” This was really weird. What is going on with Larry?

Larry with a sad look on his face reached for the door as if to actually want to get out. Kyle quickly grabbed for his arm and held him down to the seat. He then buckled Larry in tightly and put all of his weight on Larry’s side to hold him down to the seat.
“I think we ought to cut your lesson short,” Zack said as he continued to watch Larry carefully, “We need to take Larry home.” I nodded and started to put the car in gear. Then we were off down the road quickly on our way.
“Turn left here,” Kyle directed from the back seat. Zack now had his back turned to the front, making sure that Larry was doing ok.
“You might want to go faster,” I heard Zack moan from the backseat. Obviously something was happening, but I didn’t want to turn around to look, for fear of what almost happened last time.
Obeying what Zack had said, I started to go 85 mph. My long hair, now having fallen out of my ponytail, swung in the violently in the breeze as we quickly picked up speed.

We must have been going 90 mph when it happened. It seemed like it just randomly came out of nowhere. One minute it was nowhere to be found, then next thing you knew, poof, it was on our heels. A police car. Blue flashing lights suddenly appeared on the horizon. Loud, deafening sirens were going off, causing my head to spin. Larry’s random rude comments coming from the back seat only seemed to get louder. The car slowly inched up to the car, and out of habit I made the car go faster.
“Damn it!!” I heard Zack say under his breath. I could tell I wasn’t supposed to be driving.

I loved the cliffhnager! Like I said me and Mehrina could be alter egos.... Very good! You forgot a few spaces and you could might want to read over the grammar, but it was great! You included language too. ^-^ Remember: language can be tasteful. Good work! Submit chapter 10 soon, okay? I never though I'd say this but this is much better than Edge Of Power chapter 14! Sam has been beaten... Zack kind of reminds me of Zaven from my book Past Alive... Good work!
