What If? (a pregunta)
by Gregory Christiano (Age: 61)
copyright 02-12-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

There could be a million 'what ifs,' - the lessons of life and history are derived not only from events that actually happened, but also from what could have happened.

What if the South had won the Civil War?
Our accents would go ‘south,’ for sure.

What if the Roman Empire never fell?
Now there’s an answer no one can tell.

What if Hitler had won the War?
The 'milk of human kindness' would be no more!

What if the world had spun the opposite way?
Each hour would be backward every day.

What if no one learned to tap dance?
We’d be left with ants in our pants.

What if everyone were tone deaf?
There would be no music; no G clef.

What if the sky was pink, not blue?
Our eyes would be red to adjust to the view!

What if day was night and night was day?
Our sleep would be ruined, I’d have to say.

What if you were never born?
You’d not be around to blow your own horn!

Ah, the what ifs.

What if Germany had attacked France over the Moroccan Crisis of 1905? 1870 redux and then no WWI, no Hitler, no "Cest le suicide de l'Europe!"

What if the Roman Empire never fell? Which part? The eastern half of the empire lasted a thousand years longer than the western half. And if it hadn't fallen to the Turks in 1453, no Renaissance.

What if the South had won the Civil War? They nearly did. That war started at, precisely, the only point where the North could have won. If it starts any later, it doesn't end before France has installed Maximilian in Mexico, Palmerston convinces England to support the South (slavery notwithstanding) and the Union blockade would have crumbled. Thank you, John Brown.

What ifs are fun, and ideas are often providential, but the what is is what it is, what it was, and what it shall be. ;)

Fun poem.

This is cute and remind sme to enjoy the simple pleasures in life with a sense of vigor and responsibility.

Gregory, this poem could go on forever and you would still not run out of 'what ifs'. I read each stanza slowly, then comtemplated on each one and tried to grasp the implications. It really is quite a 'mind trip' to think of the 'what ifs'.
Thanks for this.
David
