Voices Of My Past
by David Pekrul
copyright 02-20-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

The voices of my distant past,
Keep sounding in my head,
The voices I won't speak about,
The voices that I dread.

With accusations on their tongue,
They criticize and taunt,
I try to make them go away,
But they forever haunt.

Reminding me of what I was,
And what I'll always be,
They persecute me every day,
And will not set me free.

They keep on saying I am lost,
I'll never find my way,
And I will live with what I've done,
And I'll forever pay.

But that was then and now is now,
I cannot change the past,
I know the things I did were wrong,
With consequences vast.

I want to make a brand new start,
And live a better life,
I want to change the way I am,
Instead of having strife.

But I keep hearing cruel words,
From voices of my past,
I know I'll never overcome,
My future has been cast.

Well written.. no corrections to be made that I can see. The flow works well with the point you are making.. lamentations.. we all have them.
As usual, you have taken life and made art!

Whenever the devil reminds you of where you've been, remind him of where he's going!

I heard that once upon a time, now it serves me well in reminding me that the devil would like to have me lose faith.. in my salvation.. in God's word.. and have me walking in condemnation.
I had to forgive myself; recognize God had already forgiven me. It is still a constant.. something I need to remember on a regular basis. It is a spiritual fight, so to 'let the air out' of the old devil, I remind him of where he's going.. there will be no weakening me to gain my soul! He has no power over me, even in my past.
I hope the people my life has touched can reach out to Him for healing.. I can not help them. I can only try to go forward, the rest is up to them and God.

I agree with Gregory, and of course you.
As usual, a good poem on a subject that touches all.
We all have skeletons in our cupboards and that is exactly where they should remain.
I realise this is far easier said than done. My skeletons used to rattle furiously.
But time has a way of quieting them.
I no longer see faces, or deeds, and I sleep the night through.

David: You touch on a topic that everyone can relate to. Hindsight is always 20/20 and there are a multitude of incidences that we regret and still embarrass us. But as you put it to paraphrase you: we may not be able to forget those unwanted memories, but we shouldn't let them bother us. Nice way of putting it!
