The Ivory Saddle.
by Frederick Van Kirk
copyright 03-06-2006

Age Rating: 13 to 127

The ivory saddle.

Heaped death he mounts, ivory saddle bestrides;
All of bones is he, quickened bones he rides.
Clacking and clattering stallion, bestrode;
Clacking and clattering on night-clath road.

Always behind me; relentless his chase;
Offers his hand, preacher now, feigning grace.
Clacking and clattering wearing disguise;
Now, mimes young urchin, with vacuous eyes.

Ay, fear to know, (what the wailing know-well);
Pulled clacking, clattering, "wailing"- to hell.
Wary that clacking and clattering sound;
Wary, sans-carcass, where your soul be bound.

For all of life is one clattering-clack;
Choose well your ride, for there's no riding back.

Fred,
Very powerful and beautiful words. They reach out and pull one into the poem. I don't know why I feel an echoing quality to this?Perhaps because it reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe.

P.S. I wrote some ee cummings-like poems, so I guess i'm

This was really well written, and has a lot of meaning to it! I like how you can make it so that you're clearly getting the point across, without stating it in exact words.

Well, you can pin darkness on the head. For warned we are for the lives we choose, mount up and ride the steed of life.

I agree with all the others that this is a very good poem and that your word choice is great.The form matches well with your words and this is a very enjoyable read! Thanks, Anthony

Well, I'm impressed. Wording is terrific and combined with the pacing it has the feel of an early Gothic era poet's work. I interpreted it as a warning that we only get one chance at life and ought to make the best of it, since we could die at any time. Beautifully done. Either that, or it's just pretty wordplay and I'm really pretentious. I'll hope for the former, wink wink nudge nudge.
