Fighting Inspiration

Lying in this eerie trench
It’s my rifle that I clench
Knowing death is drawing close
I think of those I love the most

Trying to escape this fear
That is growing as they near
I start to pray there on my knees
Longing to be back overseas

All I hear are ghastly sounds
And I turn and look around
Bleeding, screaming, and so much death
Not many soldiers are there left

Hiding from the flare lit skies
I dive down and hide my eyes
Then there is a powerful blast
How long will my troops last?

Shells and bullets whistle by
And I ask myself just why?
Why did I chose this painful path
To enter into this bloodbath

Crouching behind my sandbag
I catch a glance of the flag
There was all my inspiration
Behind me was my whole nation
