Perfect Days

Studying across the maze of
bolt holes and rocky ways
a haze of emotions and influence appears
as if to take the heart
and drop it off the Santa Monica
Pier, you remember that trip?
The games, the clams,
the sand and the lips
that kissed underneathe the pale
streaming light,
I never wanted it to sink down into night
but wishes go ungranted
and it's not like it matters,
our ambitions are flimsy
and our egos are fatter,
I almost wish that someone come along
and pop
the air in our heads, our eyes
and make the time stop
for five more seconds so I can
go back to that day,
feel the heat of sun and the warmth
of ocean waves.
Smell the salt and the seals
and the early morning breeze--
the bus of high school students
on two days with no sleep.
The sound of laughter and murmurs
And smiles and skies,
and a day that is a memory
that never will die.
This was inspired by a trip sponsored by the school down to California. I think it was Santa Monica Bay...there was a Pier there, and it had this carnival on it...and this guy who bought a necklace for me. It was a lot of fun. A perfect day.

Ah sublime, perfect days and your poem. I've had a few of these and would not trade them for anything in the world. Higher than any drug I could find. Even the smell in the air intoxicates you. You poem is very powerful. I can almost feel that day as you did or at least as you wrote of it.
The bad thing about perfect days is that they never last forever. I haven't yet had a completly perfct day, nor do I know exactly what my perfect day would be. I think that being thirteen, I haven't puite come to terms with the meanings of love or purity or perfectness, but this poem, I think, has helped me come a little closer to that.
Memories are great, they can uplift us when we are down. Bring peace to our souls when we are in despair and give us hope when all seems lost.. Great write.
Debra: I agree with David. This deserves the highest rating. You definitely have the gift of language and word use. Genuinely powerful and creating an atmosphere as well. It is often gripping, and I can smell the salt air of the ocean. Top-notch work.
Some memories are worth keeping for a lifetime, and this certainly sounds like one of them. There are still some things I remember from high school that make me smile and think of simpler times. Very nice write. Thanks for the memories.
