April Fools!

Hail, April First! On you I may
With fools rush in and have my say;
I’ll say the truth in telling lies
And wear my thinking cap, be wise.
And yet they who care for what I say
May be but April fools today.
I have been told that power gives wit,
That folly still with youth does sit,
That petty thieves deserve a halter
And honor crowns the great defaulter.
But all who care for what I say
They shall be April fools today.
It’s whispered up and down, for gold
E’en stately wisdom oft is sold;
That wealth is worth and prudence rash,
And justice can be bought for cash.
But all who care for what I say
They shall be April fools today.
That corporate bodies pay their dues,
That politicians jobs refuse,
That husbands are a form in marriage
And mean a bank account and carriage.
But all who care for what I say
They shall be April fools today.
That paying bills to serve a friend
Will bring us trouble in the end;
That patriotic talk and glory
Are but a standing April story.
But all who care for what I say
They shall be April fools today.
That men do err, and women never;
That children yearly grow more clever;
Though millions starve and steal and fight,
That whatsoever is – is right.
But all who care for what I say
They shall be April fools today.
And yet read on, take no offense,
And you will find a recompense;
For now a thing to you I’ll show
The world would give itself to know!
And you must listen to what I say
And judge if you be fools today:
“There is a land where right is strong,
Where Virtue never suffers wrong,
Where Wisdom keeps a noble state,
And only good men can be great.
And if you’re fond of seeing sights
And wish to wander there,
Go straight down the crooked lane
And all around the square.”
But if you care for what I say
Then you are April fools today!

I agree with Mary. This seems "classic," like those "heroic" rhyming couplets one thinks of when reading the ancient Greeks. I love the somewhat humorous theme, though. Great job!
GOSH I love your poetry. I love the repetition, the rhymes, the humor, the wit, and the messages... both obvious... and not so. I love the way you bend the words and master them, commanding them to do your bidding. I love how sometimes you write and it sounds "classic" ... almost ancient... and other times, it's just like you're speaking or having a normal conversation with me and I hardly remember I'm reading poetry at all... it flows so well. I never tire of your work, and am ever entertained by it. Thank you, as always, for sharing it and blessing us with your never ending talent!
This is very clever, Gregory. The first time I read it, I read it too fast, and it went right over my head. So I read it again and slowed it down. I then came to appreciate the humour in it. I think we have all been April Fools at one time or another.
This is great. I really like this.
