Dealing with online harassment

Recently we have had a problem at MLM with one abusive member. He has been banned and in such a way that he cannot ever return... All incoming new members will now have to wait for approval. This will stop the automatic joining.

Dealing with abusive people : It is best NOT to even answer any email which bothers you in any way. At MLM, your email address is protected. ie no one can get your email address from the site, nor any other personal info. If you answer, however, they can get vyour address from the email you send from your mailing program. So... DO NOT ANSWER.

This is also a good guide for any abusive person. They get their kicks from annoying people. If you don't answer, they get no satisfaction and they will eventually move on to "greener pastures"

I goofed up, too, Bob. I let my temper get the best of me. Doesn't matter, though. There's always the Blocked Sender List. Bev's idea is good, too. Jackie

Thank you, Bob. I'm sure plenty of readers will keep this in mind.

Bob, this is excellent advice. I simply wish to add a couple quick comments. First, there is an organization called "CyperAngels" which is based in Canada. They work for free and have a almost perfect success rate for dealing with cyper stalking and harrassement. They were created from an organization based in Europe.

Second, sometimes the person harrassing you (even on this site) is someone you may have "talked" with before the harrassement began - so the person has your email addy anyhow. I was informed today the best move is to state clearly your intentions (ie: no pleases...state clearly - do not contact me from this point onwards) and place any further emails into a folder without answering (as you had mentioned).

Hopefully that will work. The time I was cyper harrassed last year (different site) I had to get intervention to end the harrassement. I'd suggest that if someone was ever harrassed from this site, to immediately contact yourself for assistance.

I'm glad you stopped this issue at the source and now, we can move forward to continue enjoying this wonderful site.

Great advice Bob!

I wish I had read this before I just aswered an email from a person who emailed me about a comment on his article---guess who it was? Okay, kick me now. Thanks, Bob, I'll know better next time.
